KIDPIX TUTORIAL
Before you start, create a folder in your temp items. Call it “yourlastnameKidPix”. Assessment of your tutorial will see if you have created exactly what is described.
Pix1
- Find the KidPix application on your hard drive (Education Software)
- Open the KidPix application program
- Click on KidPix
- Click on Wacky Pencil tool
- Draw a green line (with rolling hills) from the left to right borders. Make sure your line touches both borders.
- Use oval tool & first choice on left of bar at bottom to draw a yellow sun in the sky
- Use the oval tool again to draw a blue lake.
- Click on paint bucket tool and color green. Choose a texture from the tool bar at the bottom.
- Now click below line, but outside of your lake.
- Click on Rubber Stamp tool. Select Goodies>Pick a Stamp Set and choose the Romantic stamp set. Find the gondola and add it to your lake.
- Now make your sky blue and add a fluffy white cloud to your sky.
- Use the Talking Alphabet Stamps tool to print your name in the sky.
- Save your creation as “Pix1” in your “lastnameKidPix” folder.
Pix2
- Open a new blank KidPix page
- Select the Typewriter tool & click on the screen. Enlarge your text box some.
- Type your full name in the text box. Make the font Artisian, size 36, and blue.
- Place your name box in upper left. Start a new text box below your name. Switch to black and Comic Sans, size 32. Type “I like to ……….” You fill in the blank."
- Adjust this text box so your “I like” statement is ‘vertical’ down the left side with one word per line.
- Now find an appropriate stamp for what you like to do. Add it to your picture in 3 sizes. Use the Option key and the Shift key to vary the size.
- Click on Typewriter tool and select your “I like…” statement.
- From Toolbox menu, select Paint Text to Background. Select Paint Active Text Box. After you click OK, you will no longer be able to edit or move this “I do…” text.
- Click on Electric Mixer tool and the Wave option on bottom bar. Now click on your largest stamp. See what happens? But not to your name.
- Add background color.
- Save this picture as “Pix2” in your “lastnameKidPix” folder.
Stamp1
- Open Stampimator. File>Import Picture (your Pix1 from Temp folder).
- Goodies>Pick a Stamp. Set>still. Choose a stamp for something to run across your landscape.
- After choosing your stamp, place stamp on far right (or left) of picture. Click and hold and move your stamp across the landscape – rather quickly as you must finish before the timer at top.
- Now watch it move. Click the double arrow button. Click the about face button. Now your stamp should go across your landscape, turn around and come back.
- Select blank box on right below your stamp. Goodies>Pick a Stamp from Teeny Toons, Toonies1 or Toonies2. Choose a stamp for something to put in the water. Place it in the water. Click the Helicopter symbol on right.
- Select blank box below your 2 stamps. Goodies>Pick a Stamp. Set spin. Choose a stamp that can roll (turn over) across your landscape. Click hold & move it across your landscape. If it isn’t spinning, click the Helicopter.
- File>Save for SlideShow. Call it “Stamp1” and put it in your “lastnameKidPix” folder.
SlideShow
- Now make a slide show using Pix1, Pix2, and Stamp1, in that order.
- Below the “trucks” there are symbols that allow you to select what picture or stampimation to use for the slide, what sound to use, what transition to use, and what timing to use.
- Include sound and transitions.
- Adjust timing of your show.
- File>Save as “SlideShow” in your “lastnameKidPix” folder.
Deposit your “lastnameKidPix” folder in the KidPix folder in the KidPix Tutorial folder in xServe before leaving. Your deposited folder must contain your Pix1, Pix2, Stamp1, and SlideShow. If you want to keep a copy, you should also drag the folder to your home directory.
Now, it’s time to get creative. Find a partner and create a “How to ….” slide show (any topic you wish). Aim for 5-8 slides. There is a KidPix CD for each pair so you can add backgrounds, movies, sounds, etc. to your show. Explore the features of KidPix as you create. First create a folder in your Temp Items for your show and then place everything you create in this folder. Deposit your folder in the KidPix Original folder in xServe and save it in one your home directories. We will view your show at a future class meeting. Assessment of your creation will see if the following are included: 5 or more slides, backgrounds, movie, sound, transitions between slides, stamp, & animation. Creativity will also be considered.
