Cineca is a Consortium of 54 Italian Universities*, the National Institute of Oceanography and Experimental Geophysics – OGS, the National Research Council – CNR, and the Ministry of University and Research.
Today it merges the specificities and competences of the other two Italian High Computing Consortia, Cilea and Caspur: as a unique reference point for technology innovation in Italy, with its services Cineca supports the whole Higher Education and research system.
It supports the scientific community by means of high performance computing, develops management systems for the university administrations and for the Ministry of University and Research, designs and develops information systems for businesses, Heath Care organizations and Public Administration
Its institutional mission is to support the Italian scientific community through supercomputing and its applications. To perform this important task, Cineca has a computing environment equipped with cutting-edge technology, the most advanced hardware resources and highly-qualified personnel who cooperate with researchers in the use of the technological infrastructure, in both the academic and industrial fields. Moreover, Cineca supports scientific community with its advanced graphics-related skills.
Cineca’s presence on a European scale is very important, as it takes part in several EU-funded research projects, with many initiatives for the promotion, development and dissemination of leading IT technologies.
Since the end of the 1980s, Cineca has broadened the scope of its institutional mission, by gradually embracing all IT sectors, developing management and administrative services for universities (management of personnel, accounting and secretariats) and designing webbased systems for the exchange of information between the Ministry of Education, University and Research and the National Academic System..
The Consortium is also strongly committed to technology transfer of its competencies to different categories of users, from private companies to the Public Administration.
In the biomedical and healthcare field, the Consortium has implemented several systems for the management and analysis of the information for major organizations and research institutes
Moreover, Cineca provides infrastructural services ranging from consultancies to the outsourcing of information systems, from multimedia and multi-channel communication, to the support to teaching and training through e-learning technologies.
Cineca is in compliance with the ISO management system standards 9001:2000 and 27001:2005.
More and more a high-tech content link between the academic, research, industrial and Public Administration worlds, Cineca can boast thousands of users which include universities, research institutes (either public or private), companies, local authorities and ministries.
