DAVID IS ANOINTED KING OVER JUDAH

2 Samuel 1:1-2:7

Key Verse: 2:4a

1.  Review the death of Saul (1Sa 31:1-13) Note where David was at this time (1:1; 1Sa 30: 17-20) On the third day, what news did David receive? (1:2-4) How did David confirm the news that Saul was dead? (5-10) How was the Amalekite’s story different from what actually had happened? Why did he change the story?

2.  How did David and his men respond to the news? (1:11-12) In light of Saul’s murderous treatment of David, how is this response extraordinary? What can we learn from him? How did they see Saul and Jonathan’s deaths from God’s point of view? How did David deal with the Amalekite, and why? (13-16)

3.  How did David respond personally and publicly to the deaths of Saul and Jonathan? (17-18) What does the word “lament” mean? For what do people usually lament? How is David’s lament different? For what should we lament? (La 2:19) Why did David teach this to his people?

4.  How often is “mighty” repeated? (19-27) What good things about Saul and Jonathan did David recall? (22-24) How might remembering their qualities have helped the nation at this time of tragedy? What did he remember about Jonathan? (25-26; 1Sa 18:1-4; 20:16,41-42; 23:16-18) What can we learn here about how to grieve properly?

5.  Where had David been, and why was he so prayerful about going back to Judah? (2:1) What can we learn from his inquiring of the Lord? What happened when he settled in Hebron? (2-4a) What does it mean that the men of Judah anointed him? What is the significance of David’s becoming king of Judah? (Ge 49:10; Ac 13:22b)

6.  As king, what did David do first? (2:4b-7) What does this show about the nature of his kingship?
