This qualification is expiring. The last date to meet the requirements is 31 December 2009.

Purpose

The National Certificate in Materials Processing (Level 3) [Ref:1074] is a qualification for a variety of materials processing industries. The strands within the qualification are designed to recognise the skills and knowledge necessary to operate particular production processes at an advanced level. The general strand allows people the opportunity to customise their learning more closely to their specific job roles. In this strand they are able to select unit standards from allied sectors that are commonly used within materials processing organisations, or to select more generic materials processing industry skills. The elective component offers significant flexibility to meet specific enterprise requirements.

Holders of this certificate are able to work under limited supervision.

Certificate holders are encouraged to undertake further training. There are specialised National Certificates up to Level 4 in related sectors (detailed below). People interested in acquiring supervisory skills and knowledge may also be interested in undertaking the National Certificate in First Line Management (Communication and Quality) (Level3) [Ref:0743] and the National Certificate in First Line Management (Level4) [Ref:0649].

The National Certificates in Materials Processing at Levels 1, 2 and 3 complement existing series of qualifications:

  • The National Certificates in Manufacturing and Mechanical Engineering at Levels 1, 2, 3 and 4 [Refs: 0126; 0127; 0128; 0750]
  • The National Certificates in Plastics Processing Technology at Levels 1, 2, 3 and 4 [Refs:0260; 0394; 0395; 0396]
  • The National Certificates in Engineering and Technology (Plastics Engineering) at Levels 3 and 4 [Refs: 0477; 0478].

The National Certificates in Materials Processing are for hands-on production personnel, and thus the compulsory engineering content is much lower; the qualification suite has fewer levels; and they are significantly smaller in terms of credit requirements.

Special Notes

Prerequisite: National Certificate in Materials Processing (Level 2) [Ref:1073] in the same strand.

Replacement Information

This qualification replaced the National Certificates in Plastics Production at Levels 1, 2 and 3 [Refs: 0392, 0393, 0781] and all the strands covered by them, as well as the National Certificates in Glass Container Manufacturing at Levels 1 and 2 [Refs: 0945 and 0946].

The National Certificate in Materials Processing (Level 3) with strands in General, Expanded Polystyrene Moulding, and Paint Manufacturing [Ref: 1074] has been replaced.

The Paint Manufacturing strand has been replaced by the National Certificate in Paint Manufacturing (Level 3) [Ref: 1365].

The General strand and Expanded Polystyrene Moulding strand have been replaced by the National Certificate in Plastic Products Manufacturing (Level 3) with strands in General and Expanded Polystyrene Moulding [Ref:1363].

Requirements for Award of Qualification

Award of NQF Qualifications

Credit gained for a standard may be used only once to meet the requirements of this qualification.

Unit standards and achievement standards that are equivalent in outcome are mutually exclusive for the purpose of award. The table of mutually exclusive standards is provided in section 7 of the New Zealand Qualifications Authority (NZQA) Rules and Procedures publications available at

Reviewed standards that continue to recognise the same overall outcome are registered as new versions and retain their identification number (ID). Any version of a standard with the same Id may be used to meet qualification requirements that list the ID and/or that specify the past or current classification of the standard.

For detailed information see Review Summaries on the NZQA website.

The Plastics and Materials Processing Industry Training Organisation has endeavoured to ensure that no person has been disadvantaged by this review. Anyone who thinks that they have been disadvantaged should, in the first instance, contact the ITO at the address below.

Previous version of the qualification

Version 1 of this qualification completely replaced the National Certificate in Plastics Production (Expanded Polystyrene Moulding) (Level3) [Ref:0781]. The contents and requirements in the previous qualification were the same in this qualification, except for the following changes: a General strand has been added; a Paint Manufacturing strand was added; the following domains were added to the Core Elective section: Distribution, Retail and Distribution Core Skills, Stock Control, Electronic Manufacturing, Engineering – Fabrication, and English for Speakers of other Languages; the following subfields were added to the Core Elective section: Painting and Decorating andEnvironment; the following field was added to the Core Elective section: Manufacturing.

The subfield Retail, Distribution and Sales replaced the subfields Distribution and Storekeeping and Warehousing. Credits from the subfields Distribution and Storekeeping and Warehousing may be used to meet the elective requirements of this qualification.

The domains of Core Electronics and Electronic Manufacturing moved from the subfield Electronic Technology to the subfield of Electronic Engineering. Credits from these domains in the subfield Electronic Technology may continue to be used to meet the elective requirements of this qualification.

People working towards the replaced qualification automatically transferred to the new qualification as there were no changes made to the qualification requirements. Candidates for the replaced qualification are now certificated under the new title of 'Materials Processing' with the appropriate strand.
