European Standards for Swimming Pool Chemicals

There are more than twenty European standards relating to swimming pool chemicals and they are summarised in this factsheet below. Further information about where to purchase them via the BSI can be found in SPATA Member factsheet 53 and details of the BSI itself are included at the end of this current factsheet.

To ensure chemicals are suitable for use in swimming pools water treatment, there are standards developed by a Technical Committee (TC 164 – Water cycle) and the relevant Working Group (WG9 – Public Water Supply) with specific assistance from a Task Group (TG9) dealing specifically with swimming pool chemicals. In the UK, the body responsible for standards is the British Standards Institution (BSI). The relevant BSI Committee dealing with the work of WG9 TG9 is CII/59 and they and other committees in each of the relevant European countries have produced a number of standards, all of which are reviewed periodically (usually 5 years).

The relevant British Standards European Norms (BS EN) for ‘Chemicals used for treatment of swimming pool water’ or draft documents (prEN) are:

  • BS EN 15031:2013 - Aluminium based coagulants.
