Pupil Premium Evaluation

Academic Year 2014– 2015

St Basils is committed to providing effective resources and ensuring that vital support is in place for out disadvantaged pupils to improve their well-being and academic outcomes. We aim to use the Pupil Premium funding to:

  • ensure that teaching and learning meets the needs of all pupils,
  • provide appropriate provision for pupils who belong to vulnerable groups, this includes the needs of the socially disadvantaged,
  • recognize that not all pupils who are socially disadvantaged are registered or qualify for free school meals
  • ensure that Pupil Premium will be allocated following a needs analysis which will identify priority classes, groups or individuals

In 204-15 the key objectives were to linked to the School Improvement Plan Objective to improve rates of progress and close gaps for pupils eligible for Pupil Premium. This was broken down into the following objectives:

  1. Attainment: To improve rates of progress and close gaps for pupils eligible for Pupil Premium
  2. To commence the Achievement for All Programme for targeted pupils in Y2 and Y3
  3. Engagement: to improve curriculum engagement and academic achievement for FSM pupils

  1. Attainment: to improve outcomes for FSM bring attainment in line with age related expectations

  • SENCO (AHT) - early intervention & assessment; monitoring of pupil progress and interventions; 1:1 support as appropriate; ECC (Autumn term)
  • KS1Phonic booster groups and intervention
  • KS2 1:1 targeted support or small group – teacher led
  • Intervention programmes – TA or teacher delivery
  • Staff training and delivery of Talk Boost and Better Readers interventions
  • Staff training – behaviour management, attachment issues and midday training

School has reviewed its processes and procedures with regard to the identification of pupils who require additional support and interventions. Intervention maps record overviews of termly support. School robustly plans, monitors and evaluates pupil’s progress. Additional support and intervention has been delivered through a range of programmes including:
Talk Boost for pupils in FS, Y1 &Y2, 1st Class @ Number in Y1 & Y2, ECC and ECC Maths Light Touch in Y3 and Y4, Success @ Arithmetic in Y6, Better Readers in Y2 – Y6 and Fresh Start writing programme in Y3 & 4. Training was undertaken by TA’s for both the Talk Boost and Better Readers.
In addition, there has been 1:1 support for targeted Y6 pupils in Maths and Reading.
Additional interventions such as phonics (Y1 & Y2)and maths (FS, Y1) booster groups, 1:1 extra reading support in each year group as appropriate have also taken place.
FS have delivered a number of targeted intervention groups including: speech and language, phonics, Maths, fine motor skills and social skills groups.
In September CPD was delivered by the Stockport Behaviour Support Team to review school’s behaviour policy and attachment issues. This involved all staff including midday staff, who in addition undertook a further training over the half term. Behaviour logs would indicate that there are a small number of pupils with persistent behavioural issues.

Staff CPD was delivered by AfA School Coach Debra Gardiner as an overview of the programme. Twenty pupils in Y2 and Y3 were identified for participation. In addition the Pupil Premium Leader, SENCO, Family Liaison Officer and Y2/Y3 teaching staff undertook structured conversation training. Each term parents have been invited to structured conversations with class teachers – there has been excellent attendance and engagement by parents 100% attendance Autumn term, 80% in both Spring & Summer terms. The Pupil Premium Leader has undertaken pupil questionnaires and target setting with identified pupils.
Mrs Sedley, our Family Liaison Officer, is seconded from the EW Service. She has worked closely with families throughout the year
Parental engagement has increased significantly during 2014-15. FS held 6 ‘Stay, Play and Grow sessions, KS1 ‘Inspire’ sessions focussing upon reading, phonics and mathematics. Attendance has been good. In KS2 maths workshops were held for parents in Y3-5. Parents now visit the child’s classroom after assemblies and share their learning/workbooks.
These have been well received by parents. Parent evaluations have been positive and summaries are held by the school.

Laptops and laptop trollies have been purchased for LKS2 and UKS2. Curriculum support was provided by MGFL, both in the classroom and for curriculum development. Both the ICT Subject Leader and ICT Consultant ran targeted after school club to ensure that pupils had the necessary ICT skills to access and apply ICT across their learning.
In addition there were after school focused activities which reflected curriculum need.

Our Learning Mentor has an important role in ensuring the well-being of our pupils. She has worked with pupils 1:1 and in small group sessions on SEAL or Seasons for Growth.
Mrs Sedley, monitors attendance. She works closely with parents and carers to provide support and challenge. Attendance in 2014-15 was 95.4%.
Where appropriate school will support families with Breakfast Club and ensures a positive start to the school day.
Financial support has been given to families to assist with the costs of Conway (Y5) and Robinwood (Y6) and some class trips.
