ASVAB at West Perry
We encourage all 11th and 12th graders interested in a possible career in the military to stop in the C.C. and sign up for the ASVAB test on October 4th and 5th. All 10th graders are already scheduled to test.

SPECIAL OPPORTUNITIES/SCHOLARSHIPS/ESSAYS
Architecture, Construction & Engineering – ACE Mentor Program
- Students in grades 10-12 may apply
- 16 sessions October through March, held on Thursdays 4:30 – 6:30 (includes light dinner)
- Students work in teams to design and create projects
- Industry professionals serve as mentors for the teams
- Work site visits
- Location – Cumberland-Perry /Vo-tech
- Topics: architecture; civil, structural, mechanical, and electrical engineering; system integration/scheduling; construction estimating and bidding; construction management; Interior and Landscape; finishes & safety

The Central Pennsylvania Chapter of the Women’s Transportation Seminar (WTS) is announcing the continuation of its local and national scholarship program. The scholarships are open to female students currently attending high school, trade school, junior college, undergraduate school, or graduate school in PA. Any female student who is a U.S. citizen who is considering a career related to transportation may apply. Transportation careers can include: Planners/ Engineers/ Economists/ Scientists/ GIS Mappers/ CADD Specialists/ Managers/ Public Relations/ Construction/ Geologists/ Air Traffic Controllers/ Public Policy/ Finance/ Wildlife Specialists/ Historians/ Architects/ Surveyors/ Archaeologists/ Ecologists/ and more…One or more $1,000 scholarship(s) will be awarded by the local WTS Central PA Chapter, selected from applicants for any of the scholarships listed. In addition, one or more applicant(s) will be recommended for the national scholarship competition.

The Hugh O’Brian Youth Leadership program is the nation’s foremost youth leadership development organization. HOBY seeks to inspire students to live a life dedicated to leadership, service, and innovation. All 10th graders can apply to be a HOBY ambassador. They can visit for more information. West Perry chooses one representative to attend each school year. Any student who is interested in attending should write an essay describing the most rewarding and most challenging aspects of being a leader within the school and community. This essay should be no longer than 2 pages typed and double spaced. It should be submitted to the C.C. by October 13, 2017. No late entries will be considered.

10th – 12th graders interested in engineering, construction, or landscaping should consider applying for the ACE Mentor Program. “Voice of Democracy” audio and essay scholarship competition, and the new “Let’s Talk” contest, available only to PA students. Both of will be sponsored this year by the New Bloomfield VFW Auxiliary.

2018 Profile in Courage Essay Contest: Contest Topic – Describe and analyze an act of political courage by a US elected official who served during or after 1917, the year of JFK’s birth.
Special Awards:
- First – place prize: $10,000
- Second – place prize: $1,000
- Five finalists: $500 each.
- Eight honorable mentions: $100 each.
