JOB TITLE 2 x Part time Environmental Equipment Officers

HOURS 18.25 hours per week

CONTRACT Initially until March 2016, with the possibility of an extension subject to further funding.

SALARY From £21,000 pro rata

REPORT TO The Board of Trustees

LOCATION Based from Centre for Deaf People, The Vassall Centre, Gill Avenue,

Bristol BS16 2QQ but home visits within the city of Bristol will take up around 50% of work time.

JOB SUMMARY

The post holder will undertake the frontline role of a service contracted to the Centre for Deaf People by Bristol City Council. This role involves making pre-arranged visits to the homes of D/deaf, deaf blind and hard of hearing people within the city of Bristol, with the purpose of assessing eligibility for and then installing a range of listening aid/visual alert equipment.

The aim of the service is to strengthen an individual’s capacity to deal with issues relating to hearing impairment and to support them accordingly, promoting confident and independent living.

This is an important role that requires a mix of good practical skills to deal with the installation of a variety of equipment, an ability to manage a busy schedule and keep well organised in terms of paperwork, and to have a naturally empathic personality when dealing with often vulnerable clients.

KEY DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES

1.  To work as a member of the Centre for Deaf People team.

2.  To participate in the assessment of the needs of D/deaf, deaf blind and hard of hearing people. This includes:

a.  Assessment of a person’s needs in relation to their communication lifestyle.

b.  Assessment of a person’s needs for environmental equipment.

c.  Arrange for the provision and where appropriate the installation of environmental equipment.

d.  Advise regarding the use of such equipment and monitor and review its effectiveness.

e.  Be responsible for stock control and maintenance of equipment.

3.  To participate in the provision of rehabilitative services to meet the individual needs of the D/deaf or hard of hearing person, usually in their own home.

4.  To assess the need for other services and arrange referral as appropriate.

5.  To maintain clear, accurate and up-to-date written records in accordance with open access policy.

6.  To help maintain computer records in accordance with the Centre for Deaf People procedures.

7.  To increase awareness of the availability of the service by:

a.  Distribution of information

b.  Attending appropriate events

c.  Making presentations on the service

8.  To liaise with other teams, voluntary organisations and agencies as appropriate.

9.  To participate in training programmes associated with the service.

10.  Undertake office duty on a rotational basis with other members of the team.

11.  To participate in regular formal supervision as agreed with the Line Manager.

12.  Participate in all regional training including sign language and lip reading, as required for the development of the post.

GENERAL REQUIREMENTS

The post holder will be required to:

1.  Adhere at all times to all Centre for Deaf People’s policies and procedure with regard to all aspects of this service, including for example:

a.  I.T security policy and code of conduct

b.  Standards of attendance, appearance and behaviour

c.  Data protection

2.  Co-operate fully with the Centre’s health and safety requirements, reporting any accidents/incidents/equipment defects to his/her manager, and maintaining a clean, uncluttered and safe environment for work colleagues and members of the public.

3.  Contribute to ensuring the highest standards of environmental cleanliness within your designated area of work (at a client’s home or within the office).

4.  All employees of Centre for Deaf People are legally responsible for all records held, created or used as part of their business, including service users, corporate and administrative records, whether paper based or electronic and also including emails. Employees are required to be conversant with the Centre’s policy and procedures on records management and to seek advice if in doubt.

5.  Take responsibility for his/her own ongoing learning and development, including full participation in equipment training and reviews/appraisals, in order to maximise his/her potential and continue to meet the demands of the post.

6.  Represent the Centre’s commitment to providing the highest possible standard of service to service users, by treating all those with whom he/she comes into contact in the course of work, in a pleasant, courteous and respectful manner.

7.  Understand that this post may evolve over time, and that this Job Description will therefore be subject to review in the light of changing circumstances.

8.  Undertake any other duties that may be reasonably requested by the Line Manager, commensurate with the responsibilities of the post.

9.  It is a standard condition that all Centre staff may be required to serve at any location within the Centre’s area of responsibility, as needs of the service demand.

REQUIREMENTS FOR THE POST

·  This role requires the post holder to have a full current driving licence valid for use in the UK and have daily access to a car.1

·  This role is subject to an enhanced DBS check.
