One Note Notebook Migration Steps for Office 365

FYI - I recommend using any browser but Chrome to do this. I had issueswith this working correctly in Chrome without having to troubleshoot the Chrome browser.

Part 1 of 2 “Export to your local machine”

Log in to your old Office 365 account in your old tenant.

Open your ODFB (One Drive for Business) O365 application online were your OneNote .one files that are needed to be moved are saved.

I am using the one below call “test” for demonstration purposes

Open this .one file in the full desktop OneNote application by clicking “EDIT IN ONENOTE” as shown in the right screenshot.

"The .one file will open in your full desktop application. It is recommended to use Office 2016, but will still work with older versions."

1. Next select File, 2.Select “Export”3.Select Notebook under “ExportCurrent:”4.Onthe right of the page as shown under “Select Format:” select “OneNote Package (*.onepkg) as your format:

5. Click Export

A window will pop up like the screenshot below. 6. Choose your desktop or a folder on the desktop and click 7. “Save”. I recommend a place easily accessible as it’s only going to be there temporary.

This saves a .onepkg to your desktop or wherever choose to save the .onepkg.

This is the above Test.onepkg that I saved to my local desktop from the first part of the steps

Part 2 of 2 “Upload and unpack your One Note Notebooks into your new One Drive for Business (ODFB) location”

DON’T SKIP THIS STEP- Next, login to your new ODFB open any OneNote file form your new ODFB location, select to edit in One Note which will open the file in the full One Note desktop application. This creates a link between your ODFB and the One Note desktop application. Leave the notebook open and follow the remaining steps as mentioned.

The next step need to be followed in exact order.

Upload the .onpkg file to the new ODFB. After you have uploaded the .onepkg select to open it. It will automatically open or download and open to you full One Note desktop application by default. You want this to happen but DON’T UNPACKthe file yet. After the .onepkg is opened from you ODFB in the OneNote Desktop application it will ask you to unpack the .onepkg file as shown in Figure 1a.below but don’t click unpack the Notebook yet.

Figure 1a.

You DO NOT WANT to unpack the OneNote Notebook to a local location per Figure 1a.

Instead, follow the steps shown inREDinFigure 1bbelow.

Figure 1b.

Figure 1b. Steps:

Step 1. Click the drop down in the screen you have open. Change the location to what looks like a web page per Step2.This WILL NOT show up if you didn’t follow the above section that is labeled “DON’T SKIP THIS STEP”.

There should be a location that looks something like this:
Make sure you change the location to the indicated path highlighted(Your path will look slightly different than mine)in Step 2.

Step 3.Next click “Create” as shown.

This will unpack the .onpkg into a .one file as it was in your old ODFB location.

It may take a minute or two to unpack the file.

Lastly you should now have 1 single .one file with the same name located in your new ODFB exactly as it was in your old ODFB location. It SHOULDN’Tbe a folder with a bunch of separate .one files that use to be the different sections in the original OneNote Notebook.

NOTE:

If you have many of these to move, I recommend exporting them all from the old ODFB location to your desktop first. Then follow the directions above to reimport them to your new ODFB location.
