HOW TO KEEP FROM FALLING

II Samuel 11:1-4

I. THE MAN…David

*Called a Man after God’s on heart. The Bible says that man looketh on the outward appearance, but God looketh on the heart. When God looked at the heart of David in I Samuel 16, He liked what He saw.

A. Brave Man…Went after Goliath

B. Noble Man…Stayed down in Hebron after he had been anointed King till the time of his appointment.

C. Talented Man…Poet, administrator, sweet singer of Israel, and a warrior.

*David was truly a man after God’s own heart.

II. THE MISFORTUNE…He fell into sin

Not a person in this building today, that loves God anymore than David did.

Not a person in this building today that is any wiser than David was.

Not a person in this building today that is any better than David was.

A. The Word…BUT David tarried

B. The Warning…The word BUT is there to show that David was doing something he should not have been

doing.

III. THE MESSAGE

A. The Tragic Cause

1. Sin of Idleness

*David should have been on the battlefield, instead of the bedroom. The commander of the army should have been with his army. At even time he arose from his bed, must have been in his bed all day long. To him that knoweth to good and doeth it not, to him it is a sin.

It is a greater sin to fail to do what you ought to do than what you ought not to do.

If you are doing what you ought to do, you cannot be doing what you ought not to do.

2. Sin of Carelessness

*He took off the armor and began to take his position for granted. Satan will come after you one inch at a time. He will get you a little comfortable and careless, then move in for the kill.

3. Sin of Impulsiveness

*He did not arise form his bed to go out and commit adultery. As he walked out to get air, he saw her. When he saw her, Satan, sin and self begin to stir. Three persons occupy the seat you set in today.

Who you are now

Person you could be for God, if you turn the controls of your life over to God.

Person you could be for wickedness, if you allow the flesh, world and the devil to control you.

*WE NEED TO REALIZE THE PROPENSITY FOR EVIL THAT IS IN OUR HEART…SIN HAPPENS…SIN IS A……

Undetected Weakness

Unexpected Opportunity

Unprotected Life

4. Sin of Callousness

*Cold, bloody sin when he put Uriah to death. The Bible warns to beware lest we become hardened through the deceitfulness of sin.

5. Sin of Stubbornness

*Went on for a year.

B. The Tremendous Cost…Psalm 38

1. The Conviction of God…Do not think that you as a believer can sin and get by with it. If you can, probably a good sign you’re not saved. If you are God’s child, when you sin the conviction of the Holy Spirit will convict your heart. Notice the tremendous cost of David’s sin in Psalm 38.

(1) Wearied Him…vs. 2-3

(2) Weighted Him…v. 4

(3) Wounded Him…v.5

*There are two types of wounds to the human psyche, sorrow and guilt. Sorrow is a clean wound and will heal with time. Guilt is a dirty wound, that will never heal till it is cleansed.

(4) Worried Him…v. 9

(5) Wasted Him… v. 7

(6) Weakened Him… v. 8
