International House, New York and the Women’s International Leadership Program Scholarship [wu#127 & 129]

International House is a multicultural living and learning center for American and international students.

In addition to traditional classroom work, students participate in internships and cooperative education programs that develop professionalism and prepare them for careers. They gain personal and career development experience through research, residence hall experiences, student government leadership positions, and an array of community service opportunities.

The strength of the university continues to be its focus on the student experience. Historically defined as the merging of academic and student life, this strength is fostered by attentive and dedicated faculty and staff members. This student-centered attitude is embodied in the relationships among students and their faculty and staff mentors.

The Women's International Leadership (WIL) Program at International House, sponsored by Merrill Lynch, seeks to prepare a select group of women from diverse cultures and disciplines for the challenges they will face as future leaders. The WIL Program is intended to help each grantee gain a clearer vision of her own abilities and learn how to effectively lead others, particularly in cross-cultural environments. Designed as a practical training program to enhance graduate study, the WIL Program devotes special attention to such areas aspublic speaking, high-performing teams, identifying personal leadership styles, conflict management, and cross-cultural communication. In addition to the personal and professional skills acquired during the 9 month long program each grantee receives a $2,000 scholarship which helps to cover some of the expenses of living at International House.
