BUNDABERG CRICKET ASSOCIATION – CODE OF BEHAVIOUR

Dear Player

As a player, your role is to include making sure cricket is played both within its laws and within the spirit of the game. Together with umpires, you are responsible for setting the tone for the conduct of cricket matches in which you compete to ensure the level of sportsmanship traditionally inherent in the game is observed. The following pledge should serve as a useful guide to the standards all cricket players should strive to maintain:

Players’ Spirit of Australian Cricket

On field

  • Play hard, fair and accept the umpire’s decisions
  • Enjoyment, pride, passion and respect for the game
  • Positive play, pressure, body language and banter are legitimate tactics.

Off field

  • Private conduct should reflect positively on the game of cricket.

Our Team

  • Honesty, loyalty, compassion, mentoring and support
  • Be the best we can be and leave the game in better shape than before.

Our Opponents

  • Acknowledge and respect diverse cultural values and beliefs.

Our Supporters

  • Value all supporters and commit to giving our best.

Our Family

  • Recognise the sacrifices of our families.

Traditionally, cricket has been the one sport to maintain and promote the highest levels of appropriate behaviour and sportsmanship. While always a competitive sport, its continued strength and its image relies on the acceptance of the umpire’s decision and a preparedness to play within the “spirit of the game”.

ALL PLAYERS AND OFFICIALS SHOULD BE WELL AWARE OF THE STANDARDS EXPECTED AND CONSEQUENTLY ANY PLAYER OR OFFICIAL WHO BREACHES THIS CODE CAN EXPECT LITTLE SYMPATHY IF FOUND GUILTY.

CODE OF BEHAVIOUR

Note: This policy applies to all competitions.

a)The captains are responsible at all times for ensuring that play is conducted within the spirit of the game as well as within the Laws.

b)This code applies to all registered players, officials and umpires whether participating or spectating at any match or event under the auspices of the Bundaberg Cricket Association. It applies in addition to and not in substitution for the ICC Code of Conduct and the Cricket Australia Code of Behaviour, Racial and Religious Vilification Code and the Anti-Harassment Policy and Queensland Cricket’s Codes and Regulations (the Codes).

Specifically:

  1. Players, officials and umpires must not assault or attempt to assault an umpire, a player, an official or spectator.
  2. Players and officials must snot react with unnecessary obvious dissension, displeasure or disapproval either towards an Umpire, his decision, or generally, following an umpiring decision.
  3. Players and officials must not use crude or abusive language, or otherwise engage in conduct detrimental to the spirit of the game. An umpire would be expected to caution the player and advise the Captain of this concern before reporting any player for this type of behaviour.
  4. Players and officials must not indulge in conduct detrimental to the game.
  5. Players and officials must in no way use crude or abusive hand signals.
  6. Players and officials must not engage in any form of racial or religious abuse or harassment as defined in the Cricket Australia Racial and Religious Vilification Code or Anti-Harassment Policy.
  7. Players, officials, and umpires must not abuse cricket equipment or clothing, ground equipment or fixtures and fittings.
  8. Without limiting any other rule, players and officials must not make public or media comment which is detrimental to the game.

c)Take responsibility for your own behaviour.

d)Compete by the competition conditions and rules.

e)Control your temper – no criticism by word or gesture. Obscene language will not be tolerated. Verbal abuse of an official, sledging other players or deliberately distracting or provoking an opponent are not acceptable or permitted behaviours.

f)Show respect for your opponents and their skills.

g)Treat all participants in your sport as you like to be treated. Do not bully or take unfair advantage of another competitor.

h)Respect the rights, dignity and worth of all participants regardless of their gender, ability, cultural background or religion.

i)Demonstrate appropriate social behaviour on and off the field.

Areas of Concern That Players Must Control

a)The use of offensive language – generally in the form of disparaging and abusing remarks to an opposing player or toward an Umpire, or even as an expression of frustration or self-admonishment. Not only is such language generally audible beyond the playing arena but too frequently is an over-reaction to some quite straight-forward incident.

b)The questioning/disputing of the Umpire’s decision – often in an aggressive or sarcastic manner. This applies equally to both batsmen and bowlers on dismissals and unsuccessful appeals as to the judgement of calls and no-balls, wides, byes, etc.

c)The excessive number of frivolous and orchestrated appeals- primarily aimed at pressuring and intimidating the Umpire into a favourable decision.

d)The actions of the dismissed batsman – in failing to leave the crease promptly on being given out and then banging his bat into the ground / or throwing the bat when returning to the pavilion or any other inappropriate behaviour.

I understand that if I am reported for an alleged breach of the code of Behaviour the Conducts Commissioner or Conducts Committee may invoke the following penalties if I am found guilty:

  1. Level 1 Offence – a minimum one (1) match suspension:
  2. Level 2 Offence – a minimum two (2) match suspension:
  3. Level 3 Offence – the Commissioner or Conducts Committee may impose any penalty as it sees fit.

All senior players registered with the Bundaberg Cricket Association MUST sign this Code of Behaviour before participating in any match under the auspices of the Bundaberg Cricket Association or you may risk having points deducted from your team’s premiership points.

Having read and accepted the Bundaberg Cricket Association’s Code of Behaviour as listed above, I am aware of my responsibility and will abide by these expectations.
