3-My Redeemer Lives

8/15/10

Intro:

I.Job 19:25-27

I know that my Redeemer lives, and that in the end he will stand upon the earth. And after my skin has been destroyed, yet in my flesh I will see God; I myself will see him with my own eyes—I, and not another. How my heart yearns within me!

II.The role of the kinsman-redeemer (go-el’):

A.To buy back a relative’s forfeited property (Lev 25:25-26)

B.To ransom a relative sold into slavery (Lev 25:48)

C.To avenge the murder of a relative (Num 35:12)

D.To take care of a relative’s widowed wife (Ruth 3:12)

III.The yearning of Job’s heart was not answered until Jesus came

A.Hebrews 1:1-2

In the past God spoke to our forefathers through the prophets at many times and in various ways, but in these last days he has spoken to us by his Son.

Body:

I.Longing For An Arbiter

A.We all stand exposed by the insufficiency of our own righteousness

1)Job 9:32-34

He is not a man like me that I might answer him, that we might confront each other in court. If only there were someone to arbitrate between us, to lay his hand upon us both, someone to remove God’s rod from me, so that his terror would frighten me no more.

2)Mediator (NKJV); Umpire (NASB)

3)NOTHING TO PROTECT US FROM THE SUN—THE JUDGMENT OF SIN

B.The blood of Jesus speaks for us when we have no answer

1)JET BLUE ATTENDANT STANDING WITH HIS LAWYER

2)1 Timothy 2:5-6

For there is one God and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus, who gave himself as a ransom for all men—the testimony given in its proper time.

3)When He shall come with trumpet sound,
Oh, may I then in Him be found;
Dressed in His righteousness alone,
Faultless to stand before the throne.

II.Longing For An Advocate

A.The more we advocate for ourselves the worse our case becomes

1)Job 16:19-21

Even now my witness is in heaven; my advocate is on high. My intercessor is my friend as my eyes pour out tears to God; on behalf of a man he pleads with God as a man pleads for his friend.

2)FAMILIES OF THREE HIKERS HELD IN IRAN

B.Jesus can intercede for us because He also paid the price

1)Romans 8:33-34

Who will bring any charge against those whom God has chosen? It is God who justifies. Who is he that condemns? Christ Jesus, who died—more than that, who was raised to life—is at the right hand of God and is also interceding for us.

2)200M WORTH OF ANSEL ADAMS NEGATIVES?

It is not the intent that makes it valuable, but the follow through

III.Longing For Eternity

A.What good are all our blessings if we end up in the grave

1)Job 14:13-14

If only you would hide me in the grave and conceal me till your anger has passed! If only you would set me a time and then remember me! If a man dies, will he live again? All the days of my hard service I will wait for my renewal to come.

3)AMISTAD—THAT DOESN’T LOOK SO BAD

B.Jesus redeemed us for the present and for all eternity

1)Titus 2:13-14

While we wait for the blessed hope—the glorious appearing of our great God and Savior, Jesus Christ, who gave himself for us to redeem us from all wickedness and to purify for himself a people that are his very own, eager to do what is good.

2)Job’s double blessing did not answer his cry, as long as he ended up in the grave forever.

Other Scriptures:

Indeed, I know that this is true. But how can a mortal be righteous before God? Though one wished to dispute with him,he could not answer him one time out of a thousand.

Oh, that I had someone to hear me! I sign now my defense — let the Almighty answer me; let my accuser put his indictment in writing.

Job 33:13-15

Why do you complain to himthat he answers none of man's words? For God does speak—now one way, now another—though man may not perceive it. In a dream, in a vision of the night, when deep sleep falls on men as they slumber in their beds.

Job 33:23-24

Yet if there is an angel on his side as a mediator, one out of a thousand, to tell a man what is right for him, to be gracious to him and say, 'Spare him from going down to the pit; I have found a ransom for him'.

Isaiah 53:12

Therefore I will give him a portion among the great, and he will divide the spoils with the strong, because he poured out his life unto death, and was numbered with the transgressors. For he bore the sin of many, and made intercession for the transgressors.

But when the time had fully come, God sent his Son, born of a woman, born under law, to redeem those under law, that we might receive the full rights of sons.

Titus 2:13-14

We wait for the blessed hope—the glorious appearing of our great God and Savior, Jesus Christ, who gave himself for us to redeem us from all wickedness and to purify for himself a people that are his very own, eager to do what is good.

Hebrews 7:24-25

But because Jesus lives forever, he has a permanent priesthood. Therefore he is able to save completely those who come to God through him, because he always lives to intercede for them.

But the ministry Jesus has received is as superior to theirs as the covenant of which he is mediator is superior to the old one, and it is founded on better promises.

For this reason Christ is the mediator of a new covenant, that those who are called may receive the promised eternal inheritance—now that he has died as a ransom to set them free from the sins committed under the first covenant.

Hebrews 12:23-24

You have come to God, the judge of all men, to the spirits of righteous men made perfect, to Jesus the mediator of a new covenant, and to the sprinkled blood that speaks a better word than the blood of Abel.
