6.1 INTRODUCTION :-

WHO defines sexual health as a “ State of physical , emotional, mental and social well being related to sexuality and not mearly absence of disease, dysfunction or infirmity”. Teachers are already beneficiaries of other forms of education where partial topics in human sexuality are covered. As a result teacher trainees have the legal right to comprehensive sexuality education1.

Early education on sex is a very sensitive subject that is still considered a taboo in Indian Society and this topic is not discussed so much so far. Even there is a growing recognition of the need to inculcate responsible reproductive behavior among the adolescents. Thus before formally introducing the topic of sex education, it is extremely important to know the perception, of people, parents, teacher and school children regarding sex education to avoid any adverse effects2.

The advent of HIV/AIDS has suddenly brought this issue to center stage. In India there are an estimated amount of 2.5 Million people infected with HIV and if has been estimated that by year 2010 AD majority of infected would be in age group of 15 – 35 years. ie., prime productive year. Since sexual transmission remains the commonest mode of transmission of HIV/STD and other several related diseases it is both important and urgent to provide sex education in maintaining personal life safe and with dignity.
