Dakota Dry Bean, owned by Charles Carlson, is adding a new receiving facility- scale, office, dryer, and bins- at the Crary location. In addition, they are upgrading the capacity of the splitting mill and adding shipping bins. They are also close to completing a new railroad switch and industry track to assist in the timely loading of outbound rail cars. The Devils Lake location is a pea fractionation plant that produces protein, starch, flour and fiber primarily for the premium pet food industry. They would like to triple the capacity of the pelleting line, add blending capability, and improve bulk truck load out capabilities for movement of product by both truck and rail. This expansion should be finished by the end of the year and create 3 new jobs.

Firestone on Hwy 2, owned by Dale and Cheryl Lende, will be relocating to Hwy 57, in the former Panzer Power Sports building. Two additions to the existing building with 2 drive thru bays and a cold storage building with a loading dock will give a larger service and sales store to accommodate customers and staff. This expansion and relocation should be finished by October, and will create 4-6 new jobs.

FEATURED BUSINESS

Summers Manufacturingcelebrated 50 years of business with an open house at their Devils Lake facility on July 30th. The event was open to the public and Summers hosted a meal, conducted plant tours, and gave out door prizes. The open house brought in not only the loyal Summers customers and dealers, but many people throughout the Lake Region. Also seen at the event were representatives from the offices of Senators John Hoeven and Heidi Heitkamp. Area farmer, Ardon Herman and his family were also in attendance. Herman was inventor of the Herman Harrow (1970), and the Herman Diamond Disk (1984), two products that solidified Summers placement in the tillage industry. Overall the event went very well and was attended by approximately 450 people. The plant tours were a very popular activity with most visitors. There had previously been an open house held at Summers’ Aberdeen, SD facility on June 11. The final event will be held where it all started, in Maddock, ND on October 15. During that event the original blacksmith shop (now a museum) will also be open for tours.
