COURSE DESCRIPTION: Students will receive continued instruction in reading, writing, speaking, listening and the analysis of literature. These activities will expand student knowledge of different communication formats, focus on the writing process, and exercise creative abilities through projects, various forms of writing, and journaling activities.

Students will study the following areas within English Language Arts through the course of the year:

READING:

  • Word Recognition
  • Reading Fluency
  • Reading Vocabulary
  • Analysis of Narrative Text (Poetry, Memoir, Myths/Legends, etc.)
  • Analysis of Informational Text
  • Reading Comprehension

LISTENING/VIEWING:

Further develop knowledge and practice of:

  • Hearing and evaluating
  • Constructive Response

WRITING:

Further develop knowledge and practice of:

  • The Writing Process
  • Personal Writing Style
  • Grammar
  • Spelling

SPEAKING:

Further develop knowledge and practice of:

  • Effective Communication
  • Presentation Techniques

PROCEDURAL:Follow directions the first time they are given.

PREPARED/PRODUCTIVE:Bring textbook, paper, pencils/pens and folder to class.

POSITIVE:Respect yourself, your school, your fellow students and

property.

Failure to comply with the classroom expectations will result in:

  • Immediate feedback on the behavior
  • After class/school conference with the teacher about the behavior.
  • Parent notification (via phone call)
  • Behavioral referral sent to the assistant principal and a conference may be scheduled with the parent, teacher(s) and student.

Classwork/Homework:

Classwork/Homework will be assigned several times weekly throughout the school year. Classwork/Homework is to be ready for submission on the assigned due date, unless otherwise directed. Late homework will be accepted up to a week late, however points will be deducted based on how late it is. If you are absent, you are responsible for getting your assignments and turning them in. If you are absent the day an assignment is due, you are expected to turn in it the day you return to school. Homework must be completed neatly and thoroughly. Poor quality is not accepted under any circumstances.

Planners:

Planners are to be in your possession at all times. Upon arriving in class, please have your planner open to the correct page. Also, if you need to leave the room for any reason, your planner will serve as your pass.

REMEMBER: No Planner = NO PASS!

Projects:

You will be expected to complete projects independently, as well as in groups. You will be given class time to work on projects. Please be prepared to work on them at home as well.

Tests/Quizzes:

Tests and quizzes make up a large portion of your grade. You will be assessed at the end of a section or a unit. If you are absent the day of a test/quiz, you are to make it up the very next day.

Grading Procedures:

Students’ grades are based on points earned for tasks completed in and out of class. The points are all added together for the final Marking period grade. Points are earned for class work, homework, participation, projects, quizzes, student planners, and tests.

Assignments, daily activities, homework and class work are formative assessments and count for 20% of the students overall grade. Tests, quizzes, projects, and major assignments are summative assessments and count for 80% of the students overall grade.

B: 84-86.9

B-: 80-83.9

C+: 77- 79.9

C: 74-76.9

C-: 70- 73.9

D+: 67- 69.9

D: 64-66.9

D-: 60-63.9

E: 59.9 or below
