Grade 10Individualized Physical Education Course Outline

September 2015-June 2016

Teacher: Mrs. Schrottner

Philosophy statement for and/or behind teaching this course:

Since we can consider our bodies and relationships gifts from God, it is important to take care of them. Education and practice provide the tools necessary to care for these gifts well.

The Physical Activity requirements for Grade 10 in British Columbia are as follows:

Students will spend time learning about and doing activities from each of 3 Categories:

a)Individual and Dual Activities: ie: aquatics and outdoor pursuits

b)Games: ie: team and/or individual/dual

c)Rhythmic movement: ie: gymnastics and dance

Students will acquire skills through a variety of developmentally appropriate movement activities; in individual and dual activities, i.e. aquatics and outdoor pursuits; games, and rhythmic activities, including gymnastics and dance. Students will understand, experience, and appreciate the health benefits that result from physical activity. Students will interact positively with others through participating in certain team or dual sports, such as found at a recreation centre, school or club, and a variety of other group activities. Through this course, students will be guided on how to pursue a healthy and active lifestyle. They will be prepared to assume the personal responsibility for their lifelong health.

Grade 10 studentsmust do the following activities in order to successfully complete credit for PE 10:

Participate in avariety(minimum of 3) of physical activities at least 5 timesa week and keep a log of your activity. The log must be sent in every one-two weeks, as a minimum. This log should include time spent doing the activity and the type of activity. *A Word or Excel document works well. The sports type and hours should be totaled with the time period placed on the log as well.An adult supervisor’s name and signature and/or contact info is also required. *See sample log.

I appreciate any visual evidence as well, such as links to videos on YouTube, pictures, and so on, showing me what you are doing in your different sports.

Students need a minimum of 80 hours of physical activity for the year, with a minimum of 150 minutes (2.5 hours) taking place per week. Worth 60%.

Students will receive a mark out of 10 overall for ten hours of sports per log, which relates to the variety and intensity of the sports, as well as skills acquired. *see marking rubric for sports hours.

I am happy to discuss alternatives to some of these activities, as I realize that some families will have trouble covering all of the outcomes in each category. Please email me to discuss alternate activities if this is the case, so that we can work out a well rounded program for your child.

Sports Log:

Please do not include activities such as walking(unless it is brisk enough to bring your heart rate up) or housecleaning, yard work, etc, as these don’t cover the PE 10 learning outcomes.I will send these back and ask you to make the appropriate changes in this case. A maximum of 10 hours of brisk walking will be accepted, so please don’t include shopping, etc, as brisk walking hours.

*See sample activity log at bottom of page

  1. Complete three fitness tests during the year, at the beginning, middle and end of the course. Information on tests will be sent out at the beginning of the course, and will include performing basic skills such as sit-ups, push-ups, short run, etc. Worth 7.5%
  2. Nutrition assignment: *See assignment document for details. Worth 5%

*Please note that the Food Safe Course does not fulfill these requirements above.

  1. Research Assignment. *See assignment document for details. Worth15%
  2. Communication/regular weekly/biweekly communication with Mrs. Schrottner throughout the course: Worth10%
  3. Completion of Introductory Assignment and completed SLP: Worth 2.5%

Students may choose to replace the research assignment with a certificate showing participation in a class or a course, such as a First Aid Course, Refereeing Course, coaching, etc. The course must also cover a substantial amount of the required learning outcomes for PE 10, so please check with me before sending in any certificates for credit.
