BUNBURY SHARKS MID YEAR CARNIVAL

SUNDAY 31 MAY 2009

After a lot of preparation from the Carnival & Social committees the day arrived for the big carnival. Early we were greeted by grey skies mixed with lightening & thunder. It certainly looked threatening with the heavens about to open up at any time. Following a light shower whilst South Bunbury were training at Hands Oval the clouds started to break up. With the smell of bacon & eggs wafting through the stands of Hands Oval the first game between Northern Warriors & The Crabs got underway right on 9.00am with Larry Gleeson in charge. By this time the clouds had parted & the ground was bathed in brilliant sunshine.

Over at PaynePark with Whitey & Big Fraze in control their first game between Fremantle & Busselton also got underway at 9.00am. And this how it was for the rest of the day with both our ground controllers doing a great job ensuring all games started & finished on time. Whitey & Big Fraze had the added responsibility of also selling food & drinks after Bunbury Football Club reneged at the last minute to operate their canteen at PaynePark.

The Sharks first game was game No3 at Hands Oval against the Vic Park Pigs. The Sharks came out wearing face masks to prevent the spread of swine flu from our opposition pigs. This seem to do the trick early on as the Sharks did most of the early attacking. The big surprise in the first half was the sight of Belly handballing three times in quick succession. The bigger surprise was that only one was done under pressure. Only taken him 5 years to work out in Veterans you are allowed to handball whilst not under pressure. The early Sharks dominance was not converted on the scoreboard as the Sharks kicking at goal was wayward. However the Sharks went into half time with a slender lead.

The second half started with the Sharks attacking but unable to find the big opening. The Pigs started to get on top with consecutive goals. Big Pagey took a big grab in the goal square & converted to get one back. Bevan the cornerstone of the backline limped of with an ankle injury. The game ended with the Pigs dominant & they ran out winners 6 3 39 to 3 8 26. The Sharks inaccuracy costing them victory in this game.

The Sharks second game was at PaynePark against Eastern Hills. The first half was notable for Thommo being on his own on numerous occasions on the Grand stand wing. However for some reason the ball never made its way out to Thommo despite being in excellent position. Each time he missed out it was a simple shake of the head & start running to the next spot. With a dominant midfield (Reggie/Belly) & Macca doing well up forward the Sharks had a comfortable lead at half time.

In the second half Bomber was on the Grand stand wing on his own for most of the quarter just like Thommo. Unlike poor old Thommo the backmen were able to spot him as an easy target to move forward. Fergy & Smiley were well on top in the backline & the midfield combining well the Sharks dominated this half. Macca was in complete control up forward & finished with 5 goals for the game. The sharks won easily 12 4 76 to 4 3 27.

It was then back to Hands Oval for the Sharks final game against the undefeated Northern Warriors. The Warriors still livid with Shanes fixturing that had them playing the first game at 9.00am (furthest to travel) then the last game of the day wanted to teach the Sharks a lesson. That is what they did dominating from the first bounce to the end against an injury ravaged Sharks team. The less said about this game the better as the Sharks were totally out classed. Final scores Warriors 9 5 60 to Sharks 3 3 21

The final game of the day was the over 45’s City vs Country. With the Sharks/Warriors game just finished players from these teams made up the bulk of the players. This would be the reason why the City won one of the few times against the Country. The one highlight of this game was the Pigs run on the grand stand flank. After a long run with one bounce he dodged his mate Gelmi but Larry in his wisdom & his dislike for lairising then proceeded to pull him up for running too far. The huge crowd erupted in laughter as the Pigs moment of glory running into open goal was snatched from him by an umpire. Justice was done for the times he has done this to others whilst he has been umpiring

Other points to note from the day was injury plagued Des Scott unable to get past the warm up before the first game of the day. He was confined to goal umpiring duties for the rest of the day. Muzza Wharton dropping numerous chest marks showing the effects from his previous day activities. Award winners for the day were Belly & Fergy. Well done guys. Injuries incurred for the day Royce (knee in Back) Karl (ankle) Bevan “Twig Ankles” (ankle) Des (old age).

Now for the important part thanking all those that made the day such a huge success that it was.

Crawf for organising teams & fixtures ably assisted by Macca. Crawf for overseeing everything on the day ensuring all ran to clockwork. Shane even gave up his chance to have a run with the Sharks on the day. Now that is great commitment to the cause. Well done Shane the club really appreciates it.

To the social committee of Craig, Aaron, Tracey Evans & Tracy Thomson well done on planning & organising what was required then putting in into action on the day. They would like to thank the following for their input into either baking items to be sold on the day and/or helping in the canteen during the day.

And of course all the little Sharks that helped during the day. What a great team effort & looks like made around $2000 profit from the food & drink sales.

To Whitey & Big Fraze for their efforts at Payne Park & Larry Gleeson at Hands Oval. Great job done at both ovals with by the end of the day both ovals actually ahead of the schedule. Well done.

To all those that helped sell raffle tickets in particular Reggie & Thorpy. That was another huge success with a profit in excess of $2000. Also to Reggiewho organised the great prizes (Engel fridge).

To all those Sharks who played for other clubs. It’s not all about playing for the Sharks.

Also to all those Sharks who played in the over 45’s game (even when well under 45). It’s hard to come up for that last game but good to see so many Sharks put their hand up to play that last game.

To Wishy who did a great job with the speeches/presentations as wellas umpiring. It is always hard task when so few want to listen.

Penna who picked up the bus & returned it later that day.

Ross, Rick & Des who made sure that cartons of that beautiful drop of Emu Draught was on hand in the rooms after a long day of football.

To all those guys who helped out on the BBQ cooking the Egg & bacon.

Our friendly bus driver. Thanks to Tracey Evans who organised this.

To South Bunbury for their use of their bar facilities & the meals they put on Sunday night. Just a shame few people stayed around to enjoy the meal.

The weather gods for turning on such a glorious day. Especially after looking so threatening early in the day.
