AP Chemistry/Biology Scientific Poster Presentation Project
Topic: Plastic Water Bottle Extractables
Due date:
Value: 2 test grades
Purpose: To investigate plastic bottle extractables/polymers/chemicals and the possible negative effects they have
on humans/animals.
Your task:
Your team will be responsible for creating a scientific poster and defending your research with a 10-15 minute video presentation.
· The poster must include the information listed in the topics below.
· The poster must be completely computer generated, no hand written components.
Required topics of research: (topics become headings to be placed above section in bold print)
1. Abstract: Introduction of the question being researched.
2. Top five companies that that sell bottled water.
3. Plastic used in the bottles of your five brands of water.
· Find the company’s specifications on the bottles they use.
4. Manufacturers of the bottles.
· Check their specifications on the bottle.
5. Polymers used in the bottles.
· Research their polymerization process, raw materials used in their production
· Review the material data sheet (SDS) for the raw materials and the product.
6. Solubility of the raw materials and polymer in water and/or extractability of each in water.
7. Shipping and storage conditions of the bottled water.
8. Discuss how temperature of the bottle affects the amount of extractables in the water.
9. What are the acceptable limits/dosages of these extractables?
· Are the limits met or exceeded in most cases?
10. Research the biological effects of all possible extractables/polymers/chemicals.
· List all the negative biological effects (conditions or diseases) for each chemical.
· For each biological effect, discuss and explain how the chemical affects each of the different body systems: ex: hormones , effects on DNA, signaling pathways etc. that cause the disease or condition.
Sources:
- All material must be fully documented and cited.
- Footnotes must be in APA style.
- Poster must include a work cited page and footnotes page on the back side of the poster.
- Footnotes should be used for any statistics or copied phrases and must be numbered.
- Footnotes should be listed immediately after copied section with a parenthesis, name of author
with the page noted. Ex: ( Jones, page 222)
* Note: Not everything on the internet is true. Use only reliable sites.
EBSCO Host, NIH, PubMed, JAMA are excellent sources for reliable studies of animal and
human side effects.
