Cell Analogy Exercise
Example - The nucleus is analogous to our school’s office, because it controls or coordinates the rest of the school’s function.
My cell analogy is based on ___a car engine.
Nucleus – is the brain and heart of the engine…most essential aspect, otherwise known as the camshaft.
Nucleolus – is like the timing belt of the engine that times the rest of the engine to the camshaft, which is synonymous to the nucleolus that helps the nucleus in the cell.
Chromatin –contains all genetic materials essential to operation and reproduction, otherwise known as the manual
Nuclear membrane –the wall keeping unnecessary gunk out of the heart of the cell, in the engine this would be the valve cover
Nuclear pore –controls what goes in and out of the nucleus, in this example it would be the intake and exhaust valves
Cytoplasm –is the loose material consuming the remainder of the cell, used for lubrication and smooth operation, in my example it would be the oil for the engine
Central vacuole/Vacuole – takes up a lot of space and gives rigid shape to a cell, this would be compared to the engine block
Ribosomes – make proteins in the cell and provide energy for it, so this would be analogious to the fuel injectors that feed the engine fuel.
Proteins –are a source of energy for the cell and in this case would be the gasoline
Endoplasmic reticulum –this is like the fuel system in that it fabricates, packages and transports items through the cell
Golgi apparatus –packages and transports stuff around the cell, this would be the oil pump of the car
Vessel –the packaging that is used to transport the products through the cell, in my example it would be the tubing that carries the coolant and fluids through the engine
Lysosomes –are like the catalytic converter of the car in that they clean up the waste of the cell much like the catalytic converter filters the smog out of the cell.
Mitochondria – are the respiratory system of the cell, and these are directly synonymous to the intake manifold of an engine
Chloroplast – would be something like the solar powered panels on the outside of some electric cars.
Plasma membrane –controls in and out of the cell, and in my operation would be the hood of the car
Cell wall –rigid frame encasing the cell, in the car this is defined as the engine bay
