Stages of activity

Lead in

The teacher announces the topic and the aims of the new lesson.At the end of the lesson the students should be able to use the passive in all the situations mentioned.

Activity 1

The teacher hands out Task 1.The students have to read the sentences and make rules.

TASK 1

Read the sentences below:

Present Simple Sea turtles are found in many parts of the world.

Present Continuous Their survival is now being threatened.

Past Simple Only 1,429 nests were found in 1995.

Past Continuous The turtle eggs were being stolen.

Present Perfect Simple Oceans and beaches have been seriously polluted.

Past Perfect Simple The eggs had been taken for food.

Modals Baby turtles can be prevented from finding the sea.

This destructions should/must/will be stopped.

Gerunds They are in danger of being eaten by predators.

Infinitives They wander inland to be crushed by vehicles.

Activity 2

The students are given a text.They have to read the text and underline the passive sentences in it.The students work individually and then read the passive sentences that they have underlined.

Underline the passive sentences in the text below:

The number of sea turtles worldwide has declined alarmingly.This drop in number is due to several causes.One is pollution,the world’s oceans and beaches have been seriously polluted by the use of chemicals and fertilizers.

Tourism is another problem.Many turtles’ nesting places have been destroyed to make room for the construction of new hotels in remote areas.Baby turtles can be confused by lights from buildings and streets and be prevented from finding the sea.

Volunteers are being used by wildlife organisations to find out more about the sea turtles’ habits and to protect baby turtles from animal and human predators.

Long time measures are being planned to prevent the dumping of chemicals and toxic waste in the sea.

The students have to complete the sentences with the correct passive form of the verbs.The students work individually and then they read their passive sentences.
