Class Descriptions:

Morning vs. Afternoon: Summer sailing classes are offered all-day or morning or afternoon. All-day class is the best for getting a good amount of time on the water, although some parts of the class may be repeated occasionally. Morning class tends to have the most consistent wind in the Cove before the big sea breeze kicks in and makes the Cove shifty and the Bay windy. Early morning is a little chilly, but by the time the kids are on the water it is almost always hot and sunny. Afternoon class typically has lots of wind outside the Cove and puffy conditions in the Cove. The wind tends to be much trickier in the afternoons, and it is so nice and hot that kids often go swimming.

Harbor Mice ______

Ages 7-9Boat: JY Trainer Prerequisite: Pass the swim test

Entry-level students 9 and younger will usually begin with the stable JY Trainer, which is a simplified Optimist pram. These classes stay in the harbor at first, and place 2 friends in each boat. This class covers safety, rigging, basic boat handling, and knots. Sailors advance to the Optimist class.

Summer 2010 Youth Sailing

Ages 9-13Prerequisite: JY class or previous experience

The 8-foot Optimist is the international standard in youth sail training. The “Opti” is specifically designed for junior sailors under 120lbs in weight. We offer morning and afternoon Optimist classes for beginners, intermediates, and expert racers. At the beginning of each session, the class will be broken into three groups based on skill level. Boat ownership is encouraged but not required.

Double-handed (2 groups: Beginner, and Racing)______

Ages: 13-17 Boats: FJ and 420

FJ: The standard in high school and collegiate sailing on the West Coast, this 2-person boat is ideal for learning to sail or advanced racing. The SFYC summer double-handed class will be geared towards racing and attending local BAYS regattas as well as FJ Nationals in Southern California.

420: The standard in high school and collegiate racing on the East Coast, this 2-person boat is very similar to the FJ and is used in California as a high-level racing boat, with trapeze. 420 Nationals will be held in San Diego during the summer of 2010.

The 2010 Summer Double-handed class will meet from 11am to 4pm WITHOUT lunch at the yacht club. The class will NOT be offered during Sessions 1 or 6. (This is a new schedule for 2010). This will be the class to be in this summer. Two groups: beginner and racing will allow for racing experience and team building, with an emphasis on competitive advancement. Attending multiple sessions is recommended. Cost: your first session is full-day full price, subsequent sessions are 25% off. No charge for Opti Race Team members enrolled in the “flex” program.

Keelboat ______

Ages 8-17Boats: J24 and Cal20

With two J24s ready to go, the Bay will be your playground. In this class, there will be 4-6 students per boat, and 1 instructor. Safety, seamanship skills and fun will be the focal point of this class. Navigation, anchoring, knots, and becoming a better helmsperson will also be introduced in this class.

Youth sailing non-summer office hours: Monday-Friday 10:30-6:30.
