Writing Across Curriculum

In a well-developed essay (5 paragraphs) answer the following writing prompt:

Consider Jake Sully’s prayer at the Tree of Souls. When he pleads to Eywa to intervene, he says that his race had destroyed its own home and that there was nothing green left. Extinction was the end result. How realistic is this idea? What needs to happen now to prevent this prayer from being a prophecy of future things?

*Keep in mind that Avatar is not just about environmental issues but ties together topics from all areas of life. Issues such as imperialism, religion, racism, militarism etc. are prevalent throughout. Think about how these historical events/actions/ideas relate back to Avatar as well as today’s Earth/future Earth.

Jake Sully’s prayer at the Tree of Souls:

"If Grace is with you, look into her memories, see the world we come from. There’s no green there. They killed their Mother, and they’re gonna do the same here. More Sky People are gonna come. They’re gonna come like a rain that never ends."

Avatar is a metaphor for Earth and what did happen, is happening, and what is to come.

When brainstorming or writing out your rough draft, keep in mind those activities that adversely (negatively) effect Earth. They could be environmental or non-environmental.

The following is the breakdown for the proper way to write the essay tomorrow in class (even if you write a rough draft tonight, YOU MUST STILL WRITE THE FINAL ESSAY IN CLASS TOMORROW).

Paragraph 1: Introduction with a thesis statement (what is going to be discussed)

Paragraph 2: Discuss one adverse effect and how to prevent it from continuing

Paragraph 3: Discuss second adverse effect and how to prevent it from continuing

Paragraph 4: Discuss third adverse effect and how to prevent it from continuing

Paragraph 5: Conclusion (recapitulate the thesis)
