Certificate in British Sign Language Level 2

Aim

This formally recognised award from Signature, the national British Sign Language awarding body,

is designed to enable learners to develop an ability to communicate with deaf people using British Sign Language in a range of familiar contexts, participating in longer and more open-ended exchanges than at Level 1.

The course will develop functional communication in BSL about a variety of real life, routine and daily experiences enabling them to deal with most routine language tasks and have sufficient grasp of grammar to cope with some non-routine tasks.

Target Group

This course is aimed at those learners who:

  • Wish to acquire language skills at an intermediate level to enhance communication with Deaf people;
  • Are deaf and wish to gain a qualification in their native language;
  • Are family, friends and colleagues of Deaf people;
  • Wish to progress from Level 1 study in BSL and who may wish to progress to more advanced levels of study in BSL at a later date;
  • Are studying for personal development.

Course Structure

The course consists of three units, Receptive Skills, Productive Skills and Conversational Skills linked with topics such as Everyday Conversation (mandatory), Eating and Drinking (optional), Spending and Shopping (optional), Travel and Holidays (optional).

The total learning time is 100 hours, 3 hours per week for a maximum of 37 weeks (term time only), which allows for one assessment date per unit. The course may be slightly shorter, depending upon the candidates’ readiness for each assessment.

  • Everyday Conversation is mandatory; learners will choose 2 other themes to study out

the 3 optional themes. Learners will be assessed on the content of Theme 1 in 201.

  • Eating and Drinking, Spending and Shopping and Travel and Holidaysinclude the topics within Everyday Conversation. Learners are expected to widen their grasp and use of BSL grammar and vocabulary in these units, whilst using a proportion of the learning hours to practise their skills and carry out the assessment for Units 202 and 203.
  • Learners will be assessed on the content of Theme 1 and their first choice of the optional themes for Unit 202.
  • Learners will be assessed on the content of Theme 1 and their second choice of the optional themes for Unit 203.

Assessment

Candidates will be assessed on Theme 1 only which consists of understanding a narrative signed in BSL. Candidates must achieve all three units for the full qualification.

They will watch a DVD based on a narrative and answer 12 multiple choice questions in total using an assessment paper, which will require them to tick one box for each questions.

Qualification Objectives

At the end of the qualification, candidates will be able to:

  • Understand and use a wide range of words and sentence in BSL.
  • Take part in more in-depth conversation in BSL
  • Give and follow more complex direction or instructions in BSL
  • Give and follow unfamiliar statement or descriptions in BSL

On completion of the Signature Level 2 Certificate in BSL, a wide range of qualifications are available, including:

Lyme Bay BSL Level 3 Certificate in BSL

Lyme Bay BSL Level 4 Certificate in BSL

Signature Level 6 NVQ – related to work within the Deaf Community

Signature Level 6 NVQ – in Interpreting

Fees

The total fee for the 3 units of this certificate is £520 per candidate, which can be payable in instalments if required. There will be a 20% non-refundable deposit payable at time of booking. If re-sits are required, then the individual will have to pay an extra fee him/herself in addition to this.
