Larry Muffet
Welcome to Seminars at Hadley. My name is Larry Muffet, I’m a member of Hadley’s seminars team and I also worked in curricular affairs. Today’s seminar topic is iFocus 9, tips for using the visionaccessibility features in iOS. Our presenter today as usual is veteran Hadley instructor and technology master
Douglas Walker. Today,Douglas will again be sharing his insights into all things iOS. So without any further ado, I’m going to welcome Douglas and we’ll get under way. Welcome, Douglas.
Douglas Walker
Alright, and here we are on our first quarterly iFocus of 2015. And we have four new really great topics to cover today, so let’s as usual jump right in and get started. Now, we’ll begin today by looking at how to create a new contact. Now our iDevice is a really great tool for keeping us connected with friends, family, And of course or work colleagues. The ability to create a contact is one of the tools that makes staying in touch so much easier.
Now, today we’re only going to add a couple of attributes or elements when we create our new contact. However, we’re going to talk a little bit about some of the other types of elements that can be added to a contact as well, so let’s go ahead and jump right into our contracts app and see how to add a new contact.
Okay, our contacts app is right here on our desktop, so we will just flip to it to get started. So we’ll just flip to it.
iOS Voice
Contacts: double tap to open.
Douglas Walker
And we’ll single finger double tap to open it. So we’ll just single finger double tap.
iOS Voice
Contacts. All contacts. Groups button.
Douglas Walker
Alright, now when our first – our contacts app first opens, we’re typically placed on an all contacts button in the top left corner of our screen. That is, if we have created some distribution list or some group list, now if we were to single finger double tap on this, we would be taken to a list of any of our distribution lists or any of our group lists that we’ve created, which might be something for a future video. However, we’re just going to stay right in this screen and look for our add button to begin adding a new contact. So we will find it by just right clicking to our screen. So we will just right flick from here.
iOS Voice
All contacts heading.
Douglas Walker
Alright, now the first thing that we will encounter is our all contacts heading, and our heading of course is right in the top center of our screen, right below our time and our status bar. And so we will just right flick to our next item, so we’ll right flick.
iOS Voice
Add button.
Douglas Walker
Alright, in the top right-handcorner of our screen, we have an add button, and this is exactly where we want to be to begin adding a new contact. So we will just single finger double tap to begin adding our new contact here. So we will just single finger double tap.
iOS Voice
New contact. Cancel button.
Douglas Walker
Alright, so a new page has opened up that gives us the ability to begin adding attributes for a new contact. And we’ve been placed on a cancel button inthe top left corner of our screen. Now, we could activate this cancel button if we decided that we don’t need to add a new contact, of course; however, we’re just going to begin flicking through our screen and adding information for this contact. So we’ll just flick to the right.
iOS Voice
New contact heading.
Douglas Walker
And here’s our heading of course in the top center of our screen here. So we’ll just right flick again from here.
iOS Voice
Done/end button.
Douglas Walker
And here is the done button, and it’s in the top right-hand corner of our screen here. Now, we’ll come back and activate this done button once we have finished adding some of our information for our contacts. So let’s go ahead and continue to flick to the right to add our attributes, so we will just right flick from here.
iOS Voice
First text field. Double tap to edit.
Douglas Walker
Okay, here we are on our first name edit field. Now, we’re going to pretend that we have a new colleague here at Hadley and we’re going to name her Jane Smith. Yeah, I know, not really original, right? Anyway, we’ll go ahead and add her first name right here, but first, we will need to single finger double tap to enter this edit field and bring up our keyboard for editing. So we’ll just single finger double tap to enter this edit field and we’ll single finger double tap.
iOS Voice
Text field editing. First.
Douglas Walker
And now we’ve been presented with a keyboard, our standard QWERTY keyboard at the bottom of our screen for entering our text. So we’ll just type our first name in here, so we’ll just type Jane here.
iOS Voice
Capital J-a-n-e.
Douglas Walker
And there you go. Now, we’ll need to touch back up in this first name edit field to be able to continue flicking through these edit fields at the top. Otherwise, if we were just to start flicking from here, we would simply just keep flicking through our keyboard since that’s the last place we were touching. So let’s go ahead and try to touch near that first name or in that first name edit field at the top of our screen here. So we’ll go ahead and touch our first name.
iOS Voice
First text field, editing Jane.
Douglas Walker
Alright, and we see that Jane has now been added to our first name edit field there. And now, we can begin to start right flicking to move through our other attributes, so let’s go ahead and just right flick from here. And we’ll right flick.
iOS Voice
Clear text button.
Douglas Walker
And here find our clear text button, and we would activate this button if we decide that we want to delete what we just typed in that edit field and we wanted to begin again. However, we’re happy with Jane here, so we’ll just continue to right flick past this button.
iOS Voice
Last text field. Double tap to edit.
Douglas Walker
Okay, so here’s our text field for our last name, and we’ll again need to single finger double tap to enter this text field. So we will do that. We’ll just single finger double tap.
iOS Voice
Insertion point at end.
Douglas Walker
Alright, so now we will just write Smith here. So we’ll go ahead and write or type Smith.
iOS Voice
Capital S-M-I-T-H.
Douglas Walker
And there’s Jane’s last name. And now remember that we’ll need to go back up and touch in that last name edit field to be able to continue moving through the screens. So we’ll do that.
iOS Voice
Last text field, editing Smith.
Douglas Walker
Alright, and there it is. So we will just right flick from here, so we’ll go ahead and right flick.
iOS Voice
Clear text button.
Douglas Walker
And here we have another one of those clear text buttons for clearing the text for our last name, but we’re happy with that so we will just right flick again. So let’s go ahead and right flick.
iOS Voice
Company text field. Double tap to edit.
Douglas Walker
Okay, so here we have an edit field for adding the name of our company, and since Jane Smith works at Hadley, we’ll simply add the word Hadley here. However, this is really handy if we’re adding a contact that’s not a person but is a company, like a restaurant or a business or something like that, or a grocery store. So you could just add the name of their company right there.
Alright, so let’s go ahead and single finger double tap here and type the word Hadley here, so we’ll do that.
iOS Voice
Insertion point at end.
Douglas Walker
And now we’ll just type the word Hadley. So we’ll go ahead and type Hadley.
iOS Voice
Capital H-A-D-L-E-Y.
Douglas Walker
And we’ll go back up and touch in that company edit field where we were earlier.
iOS Voice
Last company text field is editing Hadley.
Douglas Walker
And we’ll just begin right flicking from here again. So we’ll right flick.
iOS Voice
Clear text button.
Douglas Walker
And here we have another one of those clear text buttons for clearing our company edit field if you wish, but we’re happy with Hadley being there, so we’ll just right flick past this.
iOS Voice
Add photo button, image.
Douglas Walker
Okay, so here is an add photo button. Now, it’s kind of cool that we have the ability to add a photo for out contact if we’d like, however we’re not going to add a photo today. Remember, we are just going to keep it simple in today’s video or in today’s seminar, and we’ll just right flick from here. So we will go ahead and just right flick.
iOS Voice
Insert/add phone button.
Douglas Walker
Now we’re placed on an insert/add phone button. Now, we’d actually need to activate this if we were planning on adding a second phone number or an additional phone number. However, as soon as we add our first phone number, we’re automatically going to be given a new edit field for another phone number. So for the, you know – this is kind of a redundant button, but anyway, we’re just going to right flick from here to add a phone number here, so I’ll go ahead and right flick.
iOS Voice
Add phone. Swipe up or down to select a custom action, then double tap to activate.
Douglas Walker
Alright, so here we are on our add phone button, so we’re just going to single finger double tap on this to activate it. So we’ll just single finger double tap.
iOS Voice
Text field is editing phone.
Douglas Walker
Okay, so now we’ve been placed in the text field for entering the phone number for this new contact, and now at the bottom of our screen, we no longer have that standard QWERTY keyboard for entering text. But now we have a standard telephone numeric keypad for entering our new phone number. So we’re just going to type Jane Smith’s Hadley number here, so how about we just type Hadley’s main number here. So we’ll go ahead and type Hadley’s number.
iOS Voice
(847) 446-8111
Douglas Walker
Alright, and now that we’ve entered our number, we’ll need to go up and touch in that number’s edit field. So hopefully we’ll easily find that.
iOS Voice
Company text field is editing (847) 446-8111.
Douglas Walker
And we got lucky and we found it up there. However, if we didn’t find it right away, we could always just right flick or left flick until we find it or until we got to that edit field again. Alright, so now that we’ve entered our new phone number, we have a label button that’s appeared just to the left of our new number. Now this label button gives us the ability to name the type of number this is for our contact. So how about we just left flick to it and then we’ll talk a little bit about what this means or how it works. So let’s just left flick now. Now, I know we’ve been right flicking; we’re going to left flick back to our label button.
iOS Voice
Home button. Activate to choose type.
Douglas Walker
Alright, and voiceover just announced that we can activate this to choose our type of label that we want here, so we’ll just single finger double tap on this button and when we do, we’re going to be presented with a list of label choices for our new phone number. So let’s just single finger double tap to activate this.
iOS Voice
Heading text field is editing home button. Work label, cancel button.
Douglas Walker
Okay, now we’ve been presented with a label for choosing the type of label that we really want for this new number here. So we’re just going to right flick this screen to select our new label. Now, when this page first opened, we were placed on – we’re usually placed on the cancel button in the top corner of our screen. So let me make sure that we’re there, I’m going to touch there.
iOS Voice
Cancel button.
Douglas Walker
And there we are now. Alright, so now we could activate this if we decided that we wanted to exit back out of this screen, but we’re just going to right flick from here to sort of explore and we’ll just right flick through this.
iOS Voice
Label heading.
Douglas Walker
And here we have our label heading at the top center of our screen so we’ll just continue to right flick from here.
iOS Voice
Edit button.
Douglas Walker
Alright, so here we have an edit button in the top right-hand corner. Now we could activate this if you wanted to edit any of these labels or any custom labels that we can create. However, let’s just right flick until we find our work label. Since this is a work number, we’re going to make our label say work here. So we’ll just right flick until we find work. So we’ll go ahead and right flick.
iOS Voice
Selected home. Swipe up or down to select a custom action, then double tap to activate.
Douglas Walker
There’s our home, and I’ll flick again.
iOS Voice
Work. Swipe up or down to select a custom action, then double tap to activate.
Douglas Walker
Okay, so there it is. Work is only the second label in our list here. Now, to select it, we would just single finger double tap. So let’s go ahead and just single finger double tap here.
iOS Voice
Text field is editing (847) 446-8111.
Douglas Walker
Okay, our list page closed and we’ve been placed right back in that new phone number on our new contact page here, and that phone number looks great. So how about we just left flick back to make sure we have that work label added here. So I’m just going to flick to the left here.
iOS Voice
Work button. Activate to choose type.
Douglas Walker
And there it is. Now it says work so we know that it’s going to say work, and we can add a home one for this contact or all kinds of other – pager or even voicemail type stuff. Alright, so I’m telling you, there are so many attributes in this list that we could add for our attributes. And these are things like an email address, you know, a home or work address, a website URL, or even a contact’s birthday if you wanted to. And to add them, you just keep on continue right flicking through this list. You know, but for the sake of time, we’re just going to keep it simple and we’re going to stop right here.
Now, remember we always have the ability to come back to this contact and add more attributes later. So let’s go ahead and save the information that we’ve created so far. So to save this contact, we need to go back to this done button that’s in the top right-hand corner of our screen. So we’ll just touch in the top right-hand corner of our screen here.
iOS Voice
Done button.
Douglas Walker
And there’s our done button, so then all we’d need to do to save it is to single finger double tap. So we’ll single finger double tap.
iOS Voice
All contacts, back button.
Douglas Walker
And this is great, because we now have a new contact in our contact list for Jane Smith. You know, it really is nice to have so many attributes that can be added for a contact. You know, it’d be nice to have the time today to be able to cover them all, but hopefully just knowing that they’re there and seeing how easy it is just to right flick through and to add them, hopefully that’ll make adding a contact just a little bit easier for you.
Okay, so let’s take a look at today’s next topic, and that means that we will be exploring the email action features. Alright, we all know how important email has become in our daily lives, and using the mail app on our Apple device really makes it super easy. It is an easy app to use and there’s some really great inbox shortcuts or what Apple likes to call actions or action features. And they can really make using our mail app so much easier. Now, these new actions are found while accessing the email list in our inbox. So, let's take a look at how these action features work. But first, we'll need to open our mail app, but before can do that, we'll need to close our contacts app, so we'll just tap our home button here and go to our desktop
iOS Voice
Home. Contacts. Double tap to open.
Douglas Walker
Okay, so here we are back on our desktop now, so let's just find our mail app here, so I'll get to our mail app.
iOS Voice
