Alumni Advisory Council Structure

Alumni Advisory Council Membership: The Alumni Advisory Council (AAC) may consist of up to seven (7)council members. These members should be alumni who have demonstrated a commitment to supporting Phi Theta Kappa, members, advisors, alumni, and initiatives. As servant leaders, Council members willcarry out the purposes of the Phi Theta Kappa Foundation and Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society to benefit the global community of the Honor Society. Council members serve as advocates for Phi Theta Kappa and alumni, provide advice to Headquarters,support the Council’s Primary Goals, and address the needs of members and alumni.

The Council’s Primary Goals focus on Phi Theta Kappa’s Hallmarks and are the core of all AAC projects:

•SCHOLARSHIP: Support chapter leadership and membership by providing mentorship, guidance and education.

•LEADERSHIP: Support increasing chapter and member involvement in Honors in Action and other major programming by promoting and encouraging student leadership and development opportunities offered by Headquarters.

•SERVICE: Increase financial support of local and Society-wide scholarships for members to continue their education at community and senior colleges.

•FELLOWSHIP: Facilitate networking opportunities for alumni and friends.

Council members participate in meetings held throughout the year, respond to inquiries from Headquarters and alumni, are called upon to facilitate local or regional initiatives tested for possible international incorporation and support the Phi Theta Kappa Foundation. Council members should adhere to the Agreement of Expectations at all times throughout their terms of service. Council members unable to adhere to these commitments and guidelines will be asked to give up his/her seat on the Council after a review by Headquarters staff and the Alumni Advisory Council Recommendation Committee.

Council Officers

Three Council Officers will serve staggered terms and provide leadership to the Council,members and alumni of Phi Theta Kappa. To be eligible for a Council Officer position, an individual should have been an alumnus for five or more years (defined as having concluded active chapter membership in good standing) and previously served on the Council for at least one year. Officer positions will be filledthrough the recommendation of the Alumni Advisory Council Recommendation Committeeand approval by the Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society and Phi Theta Kappa Foundation CEOs. All Council Officers must be professional with proven interpersonal skills working with advisors, members, and fellow alumni.

Council Chair: Filled during even years, the Chair will work closely with Headquarters staffto identify alumni goals, priorities and projects to better serve the members of Phi Theta Kappa in a broader sense. The Chair will also:

  • Preside over the Alumni Business Meeting during the Annual Convention,
  • Coordinate with the Alumni Office throughout the year to monitor goals set by the Council,
  • Facilitate communications with Phi Theta Kappa alumni.
  • Serve as the Chair for the Association Mentor Committee,
  • Work with the Alumni Office to appoint qualified alumni to committees addressing special projects, and
  • Set regular meetings with Council members to address progress on goals and projects.

Council Vice Chair: Filled during odd years, the Vice Chair will be involved in establishing alumni-related goals and programs and:

  • Assist the Alumni Relations Coordinator to schedule Council meetings as necessary,
  • Support communication with Phi Theta Kappa regional and chapter/community- based alumni associations, and
  • Share a leadership role during the Alumni Business Meeting and with other activities at Annual Convention.

CouncilSecretary: Filled during even years, the Secretary will be involved with the establishment of alumni-related goals and program development, and:

  • Maintain records of Council meetings,
  • Support communications with Phi Theta Kappa university-based alumni associations, and
  • Share a leadership role during the Alumni Business Meeting and with other activities at Annual Convention.

Council Member Coordinator Roles:

The Alumni Advisory Council Recommendation Committee submits Council Coordinator nominations to Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society and Phi Theta Kappa Foundation CEOs for approval.

Communications Coordinator: This Council member will support Headquarters staff with social media and other new media communication efforts. The alumnus should be savvy with the use of new media, including the most popular platforms of social media, with proven communication skills to a broad audience of alumni and donors. This role will be instrumental in engaging alumni throughout the year, as well as during Phi Theta Kappa events such as the Annual Convention.

Stewardship & Development Coordinator: This Council memberwill specifically address how alumni can be more supportive of fundraising efforts through donor stewardship and development. The alumnusshould have an understanding of philanthropy and willingness to serve as an example in providing consistent support of Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society and the Phi Theta Kappa Foundation.

Advisor Outreach Coordinator: This Council member isan active chapter advisor with experience leading a successful chapter,who is also an alumnus,to provide insight on the current activitiesof chapters and Phi Theta Kappa programming. By serving as an advisor, the alumnus is an expert on chapter engagement and can help fellow alumni understand the most effective ways to make a meaningful impact while respecting the boundaries and authority of chapter leadership.

Persons accepting appointment and serving on the Alumni Advisory Council are committed to carry out the purposes of the Phi Theta Kappa Foundation and Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society. As members of a working body, the AAC will share a role in promoting alumni engagement through associations and individual opportunities. To that end, the Council members are expected to uphold high standards and show a commitment to Phi Theta Kappa through their actions.

Demonstrate a commitment to Phi Theta Kappa by:

  • Representing the Alumni Advisory Council in an ethical and responsible manner—conductingoneself in a manner that reflects positively on self, alumni, chapter, association, region and the Society.
  • Serving as an ambassador for the Society and encouraging alumni to participate in Phi Theta Kappa programs and initiatives.
  • Aiding association leadership in positively addressing issues that arise due to the geographical and cultural diversity inherent in the Society.
  • Supporting Phi Theta Kappa financially through a gift to the Foundation and cultivating fellow alumni generosity locally and internationally.
  • Participating in all Council meetings/teleconferences, missing no more than two meetings each year.
  • Providing a timely response (within 72 hours) to Council-relatedcommunications.
  • Gaining authorization from Headquarters before training others, presenting information or acting as a Headquarters representative.
  • Maintaining a positive environment which recognizes the dignity of each stakeholderto appreciate backgrounds, opinions and goals in life and recognizing that a successful Council requires a team effort, pledging to work together to promote the Society's and Foundation’s Missions.
