Participation Policy

Rationale:

In order to improve the quality of the service we provide, parents/carers, children and staff will be encouraged to participate in a variety of consultation and feedback processes.

Aims:

  • To engage parents/carers in their children’s learning and the life of the centre.
  • To have excellent, effective consultation and communication with the children and their parents/carers.
  • To fully involve children and parents in the work and improvement of the school.

Objectives:

  • To ensure the nursery is welcoming and actively involves and encourages all parents to participate in the life of the centre.
  • To welcome parents’ views and their active participation in their child’s learning.
  • To support parents well in understanding and taking an active part in discussions about their children’s progress and ways of working together on their next steps in learning.
  • To ensure parents are asked for their views and are involved in decisions about the life of the school.
  • To make sure we have a clear complaints procedure.
  • To report to parents regularly.

Guidelines:

Parents:

  • Parents will be given a welcome pack including a nursery handbook and starting information and will participate in an induction process when starting nursery.
  • We will use a variety of ways to share information about the nursery: notice boards; newsletters; our website; our Twitter feed; our whiteboard in the entrance hall; texting.
  • Notice boards in the entrance hall and cloakrooms will contain relevant and up to date information about nursery and community events, photographs, reports and information leaflets.
  • Parents will be given opportunities to participate in a variety of activities such as workshops, children’s parties,concerts and parents’ groups.
  • The complaints procedure will be on public display
  • Parents’ views will be sought through informal discussions, evaluation sheets, questionnaires and through more formal feedback groups.
  • Feedback will be given through newsletters, notices, minutes or displays as appropriate.

Children:

Will be encouraged to express their views and opinions in a variety of ways, including;

  • Participating in planning meetings
  • Scribed comments about activities and experiences
  • Voting
  • Discussion
  • Talking tree
  • Drawings and paintings
  • Questionnaires
  • Photographs

Staff:

  • New staff will participate in an induction programme and all staff will have access to policy folders.
  • Staff will receive information about nursery news and events through the weekly and monthly diary on display in the staff room, playrooms and main office and through weekly staff meetings and minutes of those meetings
  • Information folders on key issues such as health and safety, Child Protection and SSSC will be available in the staff room.
  • Regular staff meetings will enable views to be expressed and staff can add agenda items for discussion.
  • Staff will be consulted on all aspects of the service and their views sought via questionnaires and staff meetings.
  • Staff will play an active role in the self-evaluation process.
  • Feedback will be given individually, at meetings or by minutesas appropriate.

Success criteria:

  • The nursery is welcoming to staff, parents and children
  • Staff, parents and children make valuable contributions to all aspects of the life of the nursery.
  • The views of staff, parents and children are sought, and action is taken as a result
