LITERATURE

Victoria,

There are 2 publications you must have as a 944 owner. Excellence magazine, and the Auto Atlanta catalog. 7704272844 They sell every nut, bolt, and part that you may need a long the way. They will also give you free advice over the phone.

Hansman86 951

------

Good luck, the factory manuals have been on backorder for a year. You can buy a set of microfiche for about $18 & turbo sup around $10. Find a used viewer, get the biggest screen you can find. The pictures are crap but something is better than no manual.

I bought a factory turbo manual and have had to use the microfiche for the other five volumes. I would shoot the $225 and buy the manuals if they ever become available. Jim Richmond, 87 951 2.9, 89 S2

------

The parts book that you are looking for is called the: "Parts and Technical Reference Catalog" Porsche part, #PNA000147A, list price of $10.

I think I saw AJUSA selling Bilstein's at [really good prices if only I could find their catalog!

------

PARTS AND TECHNICAL REFERENCE CATALOG == PNA 000 147 A.

------

This covers a large number of parts, but not all of them. Very handy for the casual user.

ILLUSTRATED PARTS CATALOG, 944, 1985/288 == WET 614 300.

------

This covers every nut, bolt, clip, plug, fuse, bulb, stud, etc. on your car. Indespensible for the dedicated user.

Subject: RE: 944 Turbo Workshop Manual Get One!

I will be getting mine today! If you dare to match prices for the 6 volume set, try WhiteAllen. I just ordered the complete 944 set and the Turbo supplement (yes, the real paper workshop manual). Their prices were as follows:

List $ Their Price

944 6 Volume set $225 $179

Turbo Supplement ??? $48

The list prices are suggested dealer list. PCA members get that all important discount, but I think they will give 20% off to anyone that asks for it. Great bunch of people and they really try hard. I have no need for this, but I understand that Porsche Parts Express will drop ship if you sign up for it.

I also am the proud owner of the belt tensioner tool. Costs were:

"The Tool" 9201 $461.55 $369.24

Calibration 9201/2 $28.89 $23.11

Flywheel lock 9206 $23.48 $18.78

Belt Tension 9244 $43.85 $35.08

WhiteAllen is in Dayton, Ohio (937 2916000), Dale or Dawn will help you get what you need. There may be cheaper places to go to, but they deliver locally for free and and have been an invaluable source of support for me. Marv

Subject: Re: Books

In my order of preference (all available from Classic Motorbooks, they're on the 'net somewhere too)

R.M. Clarke, editor. "Porsche 944 Gold Portfolio 19811991" Brooklands Books ISBN 1 85520 2352

a compilation of road tests from magazines reprinted in black & white. Doesn't have *all* the tests ever published, but will have a lot you've never read before... from American, British, Australian, NewZealand, South Africa, etc., magazines. I always find contemporary road tests interesting. Unlike some other Brooklands compilations, there appear to be enough 944 road tests around that Mr. Clarke can pick and choose my favourite Road & Track S2 vs 300ZX test isn't reprinted, but an S2 vs 300ZX test from "Autosport" is... (There are separate Portfolios for 924's and 928's. I don't think there is a 968 one.)

The next three are all the 924/944 books I know that are still readily available. They're all pretty much the same and I can't really see buying all three (although I obviously did :). All are fairly complete but disagree on minor issues of the early 924 story how much VW, how much Audi, etc. None of them make any mention of the stillborn 942 targa, for instance, and only the Cotton book makes any mention of the PeugeotRenaultVolvo V6 experiment, albeit only one line.

Michael Cotton, "Porsche 924 and 944" Motor Racing Publications, 1990 ISBN 0947981462 I picked this one first because it is reasonably new, includes the S2, and doesn't waste space (for me) talking about the 928 or general Porsche history. The book has a British slant. Best section on racing 924's and 944's, has hidden gem quotes like "There is scope, Herr Freund agrees, to go to 3.2 or even 3.4 litres with the 944S2 'but there are no plans to do so', With a little imagination, though, one can foresee the arrival of 2.7l, or even a 3.0l turbo model." End section on how to buy a used 924/944. The main drawback to this book is its relatively small format means small pictures, and there are no colour pictures. Best text, imho. Does NOT cover the 968.

David Vivian, "Porsche 924.928.944.968" The Crowood Press, 1993 ISBN 1 85223 4830

Another British effort. The newest of the three and the only one to cover the 968. 968 CS specs are given, but there is no accompanying text. It appears that *all* the appropriate tests from "Motor" magazine are reprinted. Large 928 section (wasted on me). Colour photos section appears to be all Porsche GB promotional shots (a *purple* 968 cab. Bleck.) End section on the state of Porsche internal politics, 1992. Larger than Cotton's book, but actually less content of interest to me. Contemporary

road tests from Motor interesting and reprinted in full (and often).

Jerry Sloninger, "Porsche 924 928 944" Osprey Publishing, 2nd ed., 1987 ISBN 0850457769 This was the first (and for a long time, the only) 924/944 book, and I put this last because I'm not sure if the book is still available or my edition is up to date it stops with the 944S. Its age works against it. Jerry was Christophoros editor at the time, and the book kinda reads like Christo of that era (surprise!) one gets the feeling one is reading the "official" word, true or not. Same physical size as Vivian's, colour photo section, relatively small 928 section. Craig Seko

Subject: Books and Jay's car probs...

I picked up a bumch of cool books that have been really enjoyable to read. They are factory Porsche books. The first one is a 944 Turbo DME and KRL manual. It sort of explains the way it works and how to test it. They have a lot of the stuff we've discussed in the past such as the high rpm idle, etc. It gives solutions, etc. to common problems and gives instructions on how to test the various sensors that the DME uses. It also comes with picture locations of the various sensors. Total cost was C$11.98

The next book and this is the one I really like is a 944 Turbo S specification book. It tells you all the differences between the normal turbo and the "S" and 89+ models. A couple of things that really interested me were the turbocharger models and the turbocharger boost pressure. The "S" comes with a KKK K262670 GGA 8.11 and the normal turbo comes with a KKK K262667 GGA 6.92 The last number seems to represent the exhaust housing size which would mean that the normal turbo has closer to a 7cm housing rather than a 6cm. Does anyone know how KKK models their numbers after?

The boost pressure according to this book is set to a max full load of 1.82 bar absolute or 0.82 bar normal. This equates to 12.0psi. According to the book, this is 70mbar more than the normal turbo which would put the normal turbo at 1.75 absolute or 0.75 normal which works out to 11.0psi. These are full load numbers taken at 3300rpm in third gear. These would be peak figures from what I can see. In comparison, my car does 17.5psi (1.2bar) peak and drops down to 14.5psi (0.98bar) in the same test! Paul's goes even higher to 19psi (1.29bar) and then drops to ~13psi (~0.88bar).

The book also dispells the myth that the turbocharger vanes are different. Nowhere did I see this, in fact this is what it says about the turbo: "The engine is equipped witha turbine end modified turbocharger, a DME control unit with different fuel and ignition curve families as well as a knock and charge pressure (KLR) control unit modified to charge pressure behaviour. The charge pressure is 70mbar higher in full load range (1.82bar absolute pressure)"

From what that reads, it's just the turbine side which is the exhaust housing which is larger, that's all. Farzaan.

Quite a few of you asked about the part numbers for the books, here they are:

944S/S2/Turbo Spec book (small format) WKD 423 520

944 Turbo DME/KLR book (large format) WKD 453 920

944 Turbo S (89+) model info (large format) WKD 495 021

You can purchase them from Weissach Performance, in C$, it'll be really cheap for the US guys. You can contact Weissach through their web site at Farzaan.

I don't really care for Puhn's book. It's old, sort of outdated (the pictures, not the concepts) and wasn't easy to read. I prefer Don Alexander's book "Performance Handling," available at Motorbooks International (and other places too):

Performance Handling, by By Don Alexander.

Subtitled: How To Make Your Car Handle, Techniques For the 1990s. A complete look at handling for the highway, autocross course, and race track. This book thoroughly examines handling principles, suspension components and their effect on handling and ride modifications the match your driving style, and choosing the correct components for your car.
