9.00-9.10 / Reading (1 Cor 11-23-26) with a few moments of silence / For I received from the Lord what I also handed on to you, that the Lord Jesus on the night when he was betrayed took a loaf of bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it and said, “This is my body that is for you. Do this in remembrance of me.”In the same way he took the cup also, after supper, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in my blood. Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me.”For as often as you eat this bread and drink the cup, you proclaim the Lord’s death until he comes.
9.10-9.15 / Comment on the reading / In the Corinthian community, the Lord’s Supper had become an individualized affair and this is the background of the reading that we just heard.
Has the Eucharist become a private devotion for me? What effect does it have on my life?
The Corinthians who are abusing the Lord’s supper have minimized or lost the basic Pauline sense that the life of faith is a life of community.
Do I consider my faith as a private affair or one in which I am part of community?
They have lost any sense that love as the right relation to others is the proper and necessary expression of their faith as the right relation to God.
Does my faith show itself in action and deeds or is my faith merely a verbal assent?
When the Corinthians tell the story, it becomes their story; they “remember” the story in a way that ties their own lives into it in a transforming and illuminating way.
In what way do I involve myself in the Eucharist? Do I listen attentively to the readings? Do I respond to the Psalm and prayers? Do I sing along with the Community?
When people live fully the new life in Christ, their faith makes itself known, their living of their faith manifests itself to others and makes an impact on them. Their story becomes infectious.
Will someone who has never known Christ come to know him because of me and my way of being?
Every time believers take part in the supper, they rehearse God’s story, who they are and where they are in God’s story. If they live it as they should, their very lives will become a fitting proclamation of the gospel to the world.
Do I have the courage to become bread for others like Christ became bread for me? How will I do this tangibly with at least one person?
