Team 357 JSTR’s Skyrise Soda Securer was born from countless episodes of the team spilling sodas. Eventually, we were fed up with cleaning up our messes, and decided that there must be a way to both enjoy our drinks and not have the danger of spilling them. After perusing challenges on the REC website, we found the Recycling Online Challenge, and decided we can solve our problem in a green, environmentally friendly way. After finding our problem to solve, we looked through our old Vex pieces to see what would fit around a soda can. We noticed that the skyrise piece was very close in diameter, and with added friction mat it worked wonderfully. After adding the friction mat and testing it with a can, we cut up an old Vex Nothing but Net ball to put in the bottom, so the can was not suspended in air by only the friction mat. The original bottom of the skyrise piece, the end that came to a point, became the top as well as the lid as it easily detached from the rest of the piece. Then, we painted our design the team colors for Royal Pride. Finally, we tested it by opening the can of soda, putting the lid on, and then knocking it over. Because we had sealed the small hole in the top with hot glue, no liquid spilled out of the skyrise piece. Also, the liquid was contained only within the lid, so if the device is kept on its side when picked up and separated over a sink, it provides easy clean up. We went back to the whole team to get feedback, and generally everyone liked it. We plan on converting the rest of our skyrise pieces into soda securers in order to protect our tables, robots, and cortexes from spills.
