PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

Hello All,

Hope everyone is staying cool in this awful weather! Way too warm for me but I guess summer has arrived.

It’s been a busy time for many of our members. Our Spring Health Clinic was the most successful so far, thank you Karen Lolli and Sharon Celentano for coordinating that event.

Our May meeting included a program on Puppy Lemon Laws, presented by Lisa Curry. There was a lot of information disseminated for NJ, NY and PA. Please make sure you’re well informed, it’s definitely a different world.

The Rally Fun day was a huge success; everyone who attended had a great time. It was nice to see some of the newer members come out and participate. Many thanks to Fran Pidgeon for doing a fabulous job putting it all together and to Kathy Mines who helped with the instruction. A special thanks to Laura Dedering for offering her property, it was perfect. Plans are underway to coordinate another practice day, so watch your email.

August 22nd is the date for our Back-to-Back match shows, with a general meeting to be held during our lunch break. The information can be found in this newsletter and under the calendar tab on the website. If you’ve not worked so far this year or need another event to complete you additional requirements, contact Elizabeth Henry to see where you can help.

September 3rd & 4th are the dates for our Back-to-Back Specialty shows, which will be held in conjunction with Newton Kennel Club’s All Breed shows. It’s a really lovely site; please contact Maryann Czerwinski to find out where she needs help.

Enjoy your summer, come out and support your club…most of all be safe and have FUN with your dogs!

Donna

OBEDIENCE COMMITTEE REPORT

Submitted by Fran Pidgeon

Obedience Chair

On Sunday, May 23, 2010 JSLRC, Inc. hosted the club’s first-ever Rally Fun Day at Laura Dedering’s farm (Folklaur Labradors). The weather was questionable in the morning, but the rain stopped just in time for the activities to begin. The event was well-attended by 17 club members and their dogs!

Rally Fun Day began with Fran Pidgeon’s oral presentation that provided an overview of AKC Rally Obedience. Kathy Mines (Rocky Creek Labradors) assisted by displaying AKC Rally signs and offering helpful information based on her personal experiences in AKC Rally.

Participants then received hands-on instruction of AKC Rally Novice signs and exercises. A practice Rally Novice course was set-up in one of Laura’s fields. Fran Pidgeon taught participants how to correctly perform the course exercises. Kathy Mines assisted by teaching participants how to correctly perform the obstacles with the orange cones and the 1, 2, 3 steps exercises (forward & backward). Participants received hand-outs with helpful tips for getting started in AKC Rally Obedience.

Congratulations to everyone who participated in Rally Fun Day and successfully navigated the practice course and obstacles! Left turn, right turn, 270 left, 360 right, spiral left, spiral right…We LOVE the big yellow arrows on the Rally signs that send us in the correct direction!

Thank you to all members who helped to make the day a success, especially Kathy Mines for your assistance throughout the day. It was a fun day for both humans and dogs! And finally, a special thank you goes to Laura Dedering for opening her home and her property to us for our special day. Hopefully some of our club members will venture into the Rally rings in the near future to work towards a Rally Novice title!
Happy Rallying!!

Obsessive-Compulsive Gene Located in Dogs

As reported on AOLnews.com

Obsessive-Compulsive Gene in Dogs Could Help Explain Human Disorders - AOL News

(Feb. 3) – If your dog seems to exhibit time-consuming, repetitive behaviors, new research suggests it might actually suffer from a mental illness. A study published in the January issue of Molecular Psychiatry reports that scientists have located a gene for obsessive-compulsive disorder among certain canine breeds.

OCD affects around 2 percent of people, and the canine research suggests that some breeds, especially Dobermans and bull terriers, are at an exceptionally high risk. Up to 70 percent of some litters seem to have obsessive tendencies.

For more than 10 years, behaviorists at Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine at Tufts University collected blood samples from Dobermans that exhibited compulsive behavior, like blanket-sucking, as well as from unaffected, healthy Dobermans. In 2001, they teamed up with the Medical Genetics Program at University of Massachusetts Medical School for a widespread "genome association" study.
