II. / Town of Cary Affordable Housing Presentation – Tracy Stone-Dino
Discussion:
Handout III /
- Tracy went over the Town of Cary’s demographics and poverty stats.
- Tracy presented Cary’s existing affordable housing developments (see handout) and explained how the Town of Cary Planning department contributes as a “gap funder”. CDBG Funds come from HUD combined with Cary’s general fund allocation to assist in affordable housing projects.
- Tracy explained that the town does not manage the properties after they are built. Usually developers use a property management company.
- The town of Cary also assists by extracting the cost of land for affordable housing developers.

III. / Town of Cary Transit Department Presentation – Adam Howell, Town of Cary Planner
Discussion:
Handout IV /
- Adam shared with committee members that he recently moved to Raleigh from Maryland and gave information about the cost of public transportation from Maryland to D.C. which can run up to $15.00/day.
- Adam provided a few Cary Transit (C-Tran) Bus Maps for review and explained that he is able to track bus riders to collect data. The data is used to increase efficiency by showing where routes are heavily used. Bus Schedules are available in Spanish and callers can reach a Spanish speaking customer service person. Other languages are currently not offered.
- Currently C-Tran runs 2 morning (6:30a-9:30a), 1 mid-day (Cary Depot to Moore Square) and 2 evening (3:30 p – 7:00 p) due to budget constrictions. Currently buses are only filled from 50 – 75% capacity. All day bus pass costs $2.00 or 30 day passes are available for $36.00/mo.
- Adam handed out C-Tran’s Public Meeting Information which explains proposed bus fare increases and public forum dates and times.
- The Town of Cary will no longer offer fee fare for seniors, instead the town offers a discounted rate.
- Adam is communicating with local businesses to expand the town’s public transportation for their employees.
- Cary currently has a contract with Go Triangle for the Go Pass.
- Cary transit offers a door to door ride share service for people with disabilities which receives some state and federal funding. Collection of fares only covers 45% of the cost of the service.
- Adam asked group members to contact him directly if they are aware of a stop that should be added to a C-Tran bus route. He also shared about a phone app that allows the rider to tell exacting where a bus is at any given time and the estimated time of arrival (ETA) to their stop. Riders can text 41411 for a buss ETA as well.
- More C-Tran information can be found at
Action Items: / Person(s) Responsible: / Deadline
