Ken Vought Memorial Award - Tuesday, July 29,2008
Ken Vought joined RHSC in January 1956; he served as president 1n 1958 –1959, then program Chairman 1960-61, Vice President 1962-63 and John Jay Program Chairman 1963-64. He was a member of the national Ski patrol for many years. Ken was on the search committee for property in Vermont and one of the members who helped build our club lodge.
The Edelweiss symbol, made from ski tips, which you see on the club lodge chimney in Vermont, was designed and made by Ken, and a silver pin replica of this is given to each award recipient.
When Ken died suddenly in 1974 at the age of 56, a committee of Carol Bancroft, Ed Pierce and Claire DeLuca recommended that an award in his name be established and presented to a club member who exemplified the fine character and club spirit of Ken. The following year, in May 1975, the first award was given to Orie Mesidahl. Over the years 29 members have been honored with this award.
You can see a framed picture of Ken on the wall in the upstairs living room at the lodge. Ken was a devoted and dedicated River Hiller and so it is fitting that we remember Ken by giving this award in his name.
Charlie Fischer was last year’s recipient and he not able to be here to make this presentation. This year’s recipient has been a member since 1973 – (35 years);). His major contribution has been taking the job of monthly coordinator during the one of the most difficult period time. The month of December. He has been doing this for the past 20 years and does a magnificent job. He has been lodge coordinator on many occasions. He is a low-key type of guy who is always very helpful and caring for our club lodge and its members.
His good spirited attitude and willingness to help without being asked is what makes him such a valued member of River Hills and someone who exemplifies the spirit of Ken Vought. He continuously instills the friendly spirit that is reflective of Ken Vought. It is a privilege and a personal honor to present this year’s Ken Vought award to Paul Schalles.
