·  Hassan Rouhani has become the new President of Iran on Aug 5,2017.

·  India’s TERI (The Energy Resources Institute ) has ranked second among world’s best climate think tank by the International Centre for Climate Governance (ICCG).

·  Reliance Industries Chairman Mukesh Ambani has become Asia’s 2nd richest person as announced on 1st of August 2017.

·  Anti-hunger activist AnkitKawatrahas beenawarded the Queen’s Young Leaders Award for 2017by Queen Elizabeth IIat a ceremony in the Buckingham Palace.

·  UNESCO has named Sharjah as the World Book Capital for 2019. Sharjahwas chosenfor its efforts to make books accessible to itsentire population

·  Former Union Minister Ashwani Kumar was conferred with the Japan’s imperial decoration ‘Order of the Rising Sun’ award for his contribution to fostering Japan-India ties.

·  On August 21, 2017 Google announced the final version of Android 8.0, now known to be called Oreo.

·  World Health Organisation declares Somalia free of polio- Afghanistan, Nigeria and Pakistan are the remaining countries where polio is still being recorded.

·  IMPORTANT DAYS

·  The International Tiger Day (also known as Global Tiger Day) is celebrated every year on 29th July to raise awareness for tiger conservation. The goal of observance of the day is to promote the protection and expansion of the wild tigers habitats and to gain support through awareness for tiger conservation. On this occasion, special programmes are being organized all over the globe by many international organisations including the WWF (World Wide Fund for Nature), the IFAW (International Fund for Animal Welfare etc.

·  The World Hepatitis Day is observed every year on July 28 around the world by World Health Organisation (WHO) to spread awareness about viral hepatitis.

NATIONAL NEWS

·  Ram Nath Kovind was sworn in as the 14th President of India. He was administered oath to the office by Chief Justice of India J.S. Khehar in Parliament’s Central Hall on 25th July 2017.

·  Venkaiah Naidu sworn in as 13th Vice President of the country. Naidu was elected as the Vice President on 5 August 2017 by defeating opposition candidate Gopal Krishna Gandhi.

· 

·  KK Venugopal was appointed Attorney General of India on July 1, 2017. He is the 15th Attorney General of India and succeeds Mukul Rohatgi as the country’s top law officer.

·  Union Minister for Environment, Forest and Climate Change Dr. Harsh Vardhan launched the “Harit Diwali, Swasth Diwali” campaign on 17 August, 2017 in order to create awareness on celebrating Eco-friendly Diwali.

·  On 24 August 2017 Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik conferred the Biju Patnaik Award for Scientific Excellence for the year 2016 to Prof Digambar Behera

·  Justice Dipak Misra is the new Chief Justice of India.

Justice Misra, 64, assumes office following the retirement of Justice J.S. Khehar .

·  Election commissioner Achal Kumar Joti will be the next Chief Election Commissioner (CEC). He will be the 21st CEC and shall succeed Nasim Zaidi. He will continue as CEC till 17 January 2018.

·  Non-Cooperation Movement Day – August 1, 2017
The Non-cooperation movement was launched on 1stAugust 1920 by the Indian National Congress (INC) under the leadership of Mahatma Gandhi. It signified a new chapter in the history of Indian freedom struggle.

SPORTS NEWS

·  England’s women’s cricket team won 2017 ICC World Cup title by defeating India by 9 runs at Lord’s Cricket Ground in London.

·  India’s Ajay Singh has won bronze medal in the 2017 Asian Youth and Junior Weightlifting Championships held at Kathmandu, Nepal.

·  BCCI (Board of Control for Cricket in India ) appointed Ravi Shastri as new head coach of Indian cricket team.

·  PV Sindhu lost in the Badminton World Championships final to Nozomi Okuhara (Japan) on August 27,2017.

·  Ace Indian Shuttler H S Prannoy won the 2017 Yonex US Open Grand Prix Gold badminton tournament title.

·  WESTERN AND SOUTHERN OPEN 2017- The Cincinnati Masters also called the Western & Southern Open is an annual outdoor hard court tennis event. The 2017 Western & Southern Open was a men’s and women’s tennis tournament played on outdoor hard courts between August 14–20, 2017.Bulgarian Grigor Dimitrov won his first Men’s singles Masters 1000 title. Garbine Muguruza of Spain won women’s singles.

SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY NEWS

·  The Delhi Metro Railway Corporation (DMRC) has become the world’s first completely ‘green’ Metro system for adhering to green building norms for its residential colonies.

· 

*Green building is the practice of creating structures and using processes that are environmentally responsible and resource-efficient throughout a building's life-cycle from siting to design, construction, operation, maintenance, renovation and deconstruction.

·  Government launches India Quake app for earthquake parameter dissemination .The mobile app has been developed by the National Centre for Seismology (NCS) for automatic dissemination of earthquake parameter (location, time and magnitude) after the occurrence of earthquakes.

·  The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) has rolled out Muntra, India’s first unmanned, remotely operated tank at its Chennai lab.

·  Chief Minister of Odisha Naveen Patnaik has inaugurated grid connected roof top solar programme to encourage the public participation to harness renewable energy.

·  Manipur’s Nungthaang Tampak village has emerged as the ‘100% computer literate’ in the entire North East as announced on 24th August 2017.Kerala’s Chamravattom village is the country’s first 100% computer literate village.

·  Earth to warm 2 degrees celcius by end of this century says study-
As per two different studies, using entirely different methods published in the journal Nature Climate Change, the global temperature is likely to rise more than 2 degrees Celsius by the end of this century.
