Activating Strategy
- Play Simon Says
- Explain to the students that the rule of the game Simon Says is to only do things that Simon Says to do.
- Read Fly Away Home by Eve Bunting.
Present
- Tell the students that it is important to follow rules.Tell the students that we have rules in our classrooms because it makes things fairer and helps class to flow more smoothly.
- Ask the students what do they think would happen if we didn’t have any classroom rules or if no one followed the classroom rules. Tell the students that they would have a hard time learning because everyone wouldn’t know to be quiet while others are speaking.Tell the students that they would be distracted by people walking around the room because there wouldn’t be a rule about getting permission to leave your seat.
- Tell the students that laws that are enforced by the police are the same as our rules in the classroom.Ask the students what do they think would happen if there were know laws.Talk about driving rules and how it helps us to have fewer accidents.Talk about criminal laws such as stealing or hurting people and how having that law and sending those people to jail help us to stay safe.
Guided Practice
- Tell the students to get with a partner and discuss why the security guards would tell the homeless people to leave.
- Discuss the students’ answers.Tell the students that even though we wish that they would let them stay, it wouldn’t be fair to other homeless people. Tell the students that if they allow them to stay there, then all of the homeless people would come to the airport to stay and they would loose their business.
- Ask the students to discuss with their partner why they think it is important to have a job and money.
- Tell the students that it is important to have a job, make money, and be careful with spending your money because you want to be able to support yourself and your family.Tell the students that even though you have a job, sometimes you may not make enough money to support yourself.
- Give the students a ticket-out-the-door.Tell them to give one reason we should follow rules.
