Battle Report for: Newton Ala.

Sir, as you know, we received a Call to Arms for enemy movement around the Township of Newton Ala. The unit gathered together on Friday afternoon. We began to set up camp around 5: oo pm. We had to stop however to eat dinner, which the local units provided. Chicken & Dumplings were on the menu. After our meal we finished setting up camp. All the members helped, and I thank them for their help. We did not have Colors, on Saturday or Sunday. But again the local unit provided breakfast for us on Saturday morning. Eggs, Bacon, Sausages, Grits, Hash-browns and Biscuits. We had a good time waiting for the enemy to show up in the area. Saturday afternoon at 2:00 pm the other army showed itself. The Union infantry over ran the Confederate gun which opposed us. We were able to turn the gun and make use of it. This action closed the battle for Saturday. The crews of both guns preformed very well. The weather was very favorable to us on both days. We ate Breakfast in camp Sunday. Mrs. Diane had help with the KP details. For this she thanks the Battery. Sunday the battle picked up where it left off on Saturday. We were able to fire 2 or 3 rounds from the captured gun. Before the gun was out flanked, and recaptured by the Confederates. It remained in their hands for the rest of the battle. With the gun the Confederates were able to start to push the Union from the field. 1st Sgt. Arnold commanded the 2nd gun crew. He and that crew preformed to our expectations and above. I saw some casualties on that gun. Pvt. Will Taber and P. M. Garrett Evett were taken out of action. However both recovered by the Salute loads. The spirit and attitudes of the Battery are to be commended. They are a unit I am proud to serve and serve with.
