COURSE DESCRIPTION: Designed for individuals who wish to develop and express their artistic abilities in a metal medium. Exploration of three-dimensional concepts using a variety of metals and welding processes to develop images and ideas.

METHOD OF INSTRUCTION: Lecture, discussion, audio/video, and hands-on laboratory experiences
EVALUATION METHOD: Upon completion of this course, the student will demonstrate achievement of the course objectives by obtaining a final minimum grade of 70% as measured by quizzes, laboratory projects and the final examination. The final grade for this course will be made up of the following percentages:
Written Quizzes 15%
Final Exam 20%
Laboratory Projects 45%
Attendance & Attitude 20%

Students that participate in unsafe activities, misuse of tools and/or equipment could have a loss of 20% of their final grade. You are responsible for the operation and loss or damage through neglect.
Written quizzes and projects must be completed the semester they are assigned.
GRADING SCALE: The following grading scale will be in effect for this course:
A = 90 – 100%
B = 80 – 89%
C = 70 – 79%
D = 60 – 69%
F = 0 – 59%
ATTENDANCE POLICY: It is the responsibility of each student to complete the time required for the course in which he/she is enrolled.
Each course consists of 15 lecture hours and 30 lab hours, for a total of 45 hours. When a student completes the total hours of lecture and lab and has completed the lab projects and quizzes/tests required for the specific course, he/she has completed the course.
A weld time log is used to track student lecture and lab hours. Students need to fill out this form each time they attend class.
1. Attendance hours will be derived from time log entries.
2. Students are responsible for their own time log.
SAFETY AND EQUIPMENT REQUIREMENTS FOR CLASS:
1. Approved safety glasses.
2. Approved ear protection.
3. Leather apron and sleeves or approved welding jacket.
4. Approved welding gloves.
5. Approved welding hat or skull cap.
6. Clothing should made of inflammable material and be free of oil and grease. Pants must full length without cuffs.
7. Leather shoes or work boots.
8. Pliers (either slip joint or vise grip).
9. Wire cutting pliers (for wire welding).
10. Mini-Maglite Flashlight.
11. Scribe and/or soapstone.
A $10 Welding Voucher Kit is required for each student upon entry to the weld lab. This voucher is used for welding supplies and consumables such as weld rod, contact tips, tungsten, and weld material to be used in the laboratory. The voucher is purchased at the bookstore and is given to your instructor before you will be allowed to participate in the welding class.
Upon entry to the weld laboratory, all students should note the location of safety items such as extinguishers, fire blankets, and be aware of the location of the nearest exits. No welding should be performed unless ventilation hood systems in the welding booths are functioning properly.
All students will be required to sit through a safety orientation before being allowed to participate in welding activities. Upon completion of the orientation, students will sign a checklist signifying that they have received and understand the safety requirements for the class.
COURSE OUTLINE: The welding classes are designed to give students flexible course hours that best meet their needs. All courses include lecture, discussion and hands-on lab experiences. The courses will have limited enrollment giving students "one on one" instruction. The lecture portion of this course consists of 15 contact hours. Included in these 15 hours is classroom lecture, viewing of videos, and lab discussion. A portion, of the 15 lecture hours is assigned as homework written quizzes. Lab assignments make up 30 contact hours. Assignments will be given by the instructor in the form of laboratory projects. It is the responsibility of each student to complete assignments on time. All assignments must be completed the semester they are assigned.
HONESTY POLICY: Cheating or plagiarizing will absolutely not be tolerated at Southwestern Michigan College. Any student found cheating or plagiarizing material in any manner may be assigned a failing semester/session grade in this course. A second such incident while at SMC could result in suspension or expulsion from the institution. A student found in violation of this section of the syllabus will not be allowed to drop this course. Additional detail regarding cheating and/or plagiarism may be obtained by contacting Student Services.

COURSE OBJECTIVES: Students completing WELD 280 should be able to:
1. Set-up, adjust and operate oxy/acetylene and plasma torches and successfully cut a straight line and hole
2. Use an oxy/acetylene torch to bend and shape metal
3. Set-up, adjust and operate a GMAW machine and successfully weld a flat bead, corner, edge, and lap joint (1F, 1G)
4. Set-up, adjust and operate a GTAW machine and successfully weld a flat corner and edge joint (1F,1G)
5. Successfully demonstrate how to inspect a completed weld and determine weld soundness
COURSE ASSIGNMENTS: Each student will be given a laboratory folder upon entry to the class which will contain laboratory project descriptions and sign-off sheets. Students are expected to have their folder with them each time they enter the laboratory to weld.
