Design of Experiment as a Vehicle for Reservoir Studies –
Lessons and Best Practices

Abstract:
From its humble beginnings in an agricultural research station near London in the 1920s, the Design of Experiment has found universal industrial applications. It is, today, recognized as the most efficient way to conduct an experiment because it offers a structured way to gain the most information about a system from the least number of experimental runs. A search of the library indicates that the reservoir management community started embracing the Design of Experiment method in reservoir studies in the 1990s. This is evidenced by the surfeit of published materials that describe the workflow and benefits of experimental design applications in diverse reservoir studies. Unfortunately, not much is written about the growing pains and practical challenges of applying this technique in a reservoir study.
This presentation addresses this shortcoming by using lessons and best practices at each stage of a design of experiment workflow to describe how to correctly navigate the many twists and turns encountered in a typical reservoir study.
Biography:
ChidiAmudo is a Fellow of the Institute of Engineers Australia. He holds Bachelor of Engineering (with Honors) and Master of Science degrees in Chemical Engineering. After lecturing undergraduate students for two years at a Nigerian university, Chidi joined Shell as a reservoir engineer in November 1991. He has since enjoyed a worldwide career including residential assignments in Nigeria, Brunei, Australia, Oman, Malaysia, South Africa and USA.
Chidihas successfully applied design of experiment concepts to a diverse range of problems including history match, uncertainty analysis, production forecasting, economic analysis and integrated production models. He is listed as an instructor for Chevron’s proprietary Uncertainty Analysis Using Design of Experiments course. He founded the Chevron Australia’s Experimental Design Community of Practice in 2009 to promote the effective application of experimental design in the Reservoir Management community. He led the group until Dec 2011 before his current assignment in Chevron North America E&P’s Mid-Continent Business Unit.

Desde sus humildes comienzos, en 1920, en una estación de investigación agrícola cerca de Londres, el Diseño de Experimentos tiene actualmente aplicación universal en la industria.Hoy se le reconoce como la mejor manera de formular experimentos porque ofrece una manera estructurada de obtener la mayor cantidad de información, sobre un sistema, a partir de un número mínimo de experimentos. Una búsqueda en línea en la colección de árticulos técnicos indica que la gerencia de yacimientos comenzó a aplicar el método de Diseño de Experimentos en estudios de yacimiento en ladécada de los 90.Esto se pone de manifiestopor la aparición de publicaciones que presentan los flujogramas y los beneficios de la aplicación de esta metodología en diversos estudios de yacimiento. Desafortunadamente estos árticulos hablan muy poco de las dificultades, del duro aprendizaje y de los retos que implican la aplicación de esta metodología en estudios de yacimiento.
Esta conferencia se ocupa de esos problemas, utilizando las lecciones aprendidas y las mejores prácticas del método,en cada etapa del flujograma del experimento a los fines de explicar como navegar correctamente por las tortuosidades que se encuentran en un típico estudio de yacimiento

ChidiAmudo es un “Fellow” del Instituto de Ingenieros de Australia. Tiene un BS (con honores) y MSc en Ingeniería química.Antes de ingresar en Shell en 1991 como ingeniero de yacimientos fue por dos años profesor de pregrado en una universidad de Nigeria. Desde entonces ha ejercido internacionalmente en Nigeria, Brunei, Australia, Oman, Malaysia, Sur Afríca y USA. Es instructor en Chevron del curso (privado) Análisis de Incertidumbre Utilizando Diseño de Experimentos. Fundó, 2009, en Chevron Australia el Grupo de Práciticas de Diseño de Experimentos para promover el uso de esta metodología entre los ingenieros de yacimiento. Presidió este grupo hasta 2009 cuando fue transferido a Chevron USA.
