Job Purpose:

To enhance the overall work of the University, Faculty and Department through contribution to the delivery and development of curricula, programme management and development, and research and enterprise activity within the department.

Responsible to: Head of Department via line manager

  1. Key Responsibilities:

The principal duties of the post holder

Learning and Teaching

  • Work flexibly as part of a team to provide undergraduate, and postgraduate teaching across the department and faculty.
  • Design innovative teaching materials and effectively deliver modules on undergraduate and postgraduate programmes
  • (SL) Act as a module co-ordinator and / or programme leader as required,co-ordinating the work of colleagues to ensure modules/programmes are delivered to the standards required.(L) work with colleagues to ensure modules/programmes are delivered to the standards required.
  • Contribute to the supervision of students undertaking dissertations / extended study projects
  • Use appropriate teaching, learning and assessment methods to support learning and teaching
  • Maintain own subject knowledge and competence through specific updates, private study and via networks
  • Support the assessment of students in clinical practice through meetings with students and educators during placements
  • Undertake academic and pastoral tutoring of students
  • Seek to enhance the quality of education and programme provision through module and programme review.
  • Participate in the planning, design and development of the programmes
  • Organise and administer tasks in an efficient and effective manner.
  • Engage in activities associated with enhancing the student experience.
  • Supervise doctoral students as principal and co-supervisor

Research and Development

  • Develop and implement a personal research and innovation plan.
  • Individually and collaboratively engage in subject, professional and pedagogy research as required to support teaching activities.
  • Identify sources of funding and contribute to the process of securing funds for own research or scholarly activities.
  • Extend, transform and apply knowledge acquired from scholarship to inform teaching/research and appropriate external activities.
  • Develop and produce learning materials and disseminate the results of research and scholarly activity.
  • Write or contribute to publications or disseminate research findings using other appropriate media.
  • Make presentations at conferences or exhibit work in other appropriate events.

Enterprise and Engagement

  • Develop ideas for generating income and promoting the subject.
  • Participate in and develop external networks to enhance the reputation of the University and build relationships for future activities.
  • Develop with others, the Faculty’s work on training courses, consultancy activity and patents.

Other academic duties

  • (SL) Mentor colleagues with less experience and advise on personal development
  • Contribute to the accreditation of programmes and quality control processes.
  • Be responsible for administrative duties in areas such as admissions, time-tabling, examinations, assessment of progress and student attendance as appropriate to grade.
  • Maintain records of activities and processes which demonstrate compliance with University procedures and policies, including student records and collection of data as required
  • Undertake staff development, including participation in staff appraisal, in-service teaching and other training based on an assessment of individual and institutional needs.
  • Contribution to the International portfolio of the school.
  • Participate in internal and external networks to contribute to student recruitment, outreach work, and business development.
  • Maintain effective relationships with key partners (eg NHS Trusts) and professional organisations in order to enhance the profile of the Faculty and Department.
  1. Location:

This post is based at the University’s City campus, with requisite to work from and / or travel to other University premises and external organisations as required.Some national and international travel to academic partners and corporate clients in relation to programmes, awards, consultancy and / or other activities appropriate to the nature of the post may be required. The role will involve off campus activity, for example supporting the physiotherapy curriculum implementation in practice locations.

  1. Attendance Requirements:

The post requires attendance at the University’s teaching sites such hours as are reasonably necessary for the effective discharge of the duties of the post, within a normal working week of 37 hours. A typical workload may include weekday evenings or weekend working to facilitate consultancy work, short course delivery and recruitment events.

Physiotherapy sits within the department of Sport, Exercise and Rehabilitation which comprises of sports science, coaching, management and development disciplines as well as physiotherapy. The department has strong teaching and learning and research and enterprise links with many of the other disciplines across the faculty and university.

The Faculty comprises of: teacher education, social work and social care,nursing, midwifery, occupational therapy, Operating department practice, physiotherapy, sport disciplines, biological sciences, chemistry, nutrition, psychology and public health. Having no fewer than 12,000 full and part time students, we are the largest Faculty in Northumbria University.

We have made a considerable investment in recent years with state-of-the-art suite of sport science laboratories that form part of the new £30 million Sport Centre as well as the development of clinical skills facilities with a range of simulated learning environments including ward areas and intensive therapy suites.

The Faculty has undergone a remarkable period of growth and an exciting research culture thrives within the Faculty with significant success in the Research Excellence Framework 2014 (REF).We deliver regional, national and international research projects, working collaboratively with many external organisations including government agencies and funding bodies, multi-national companies, community groups, regional agencies.Our academic staff, supported by library and learning resource staff, administrators and technicians, deliver a comprehensive range of programmes, research and consultancy.
