Dear Parent/Guardian

National Science and Engineering Competition 2015

Your son/daughter was successful in winning the regional heat at Crawley Big Bang fair in July 2014 with an excellent engineering project, Odometry measurements on Mars. We have the opportunity to compete in the Nationals at the NEC in Birmingham.

We will travel by car on the 10 March and return by train on the 12 March 2015.

The proposed itinerary

Depart Oaklands on Tuesday 10 March ata 12.30pm

Arrive at Premier Inn, 112 Kenilworth Road, Balsall Common, Berkswell, Coventry, CV7 7EX

Set up the display stand 6pm – 8pm at the NEC

Wednesday 11 March:

Breakfast at the hotel and then leave for the NEC at 8am

Competition begins

Dinner and return to hotel at 9pm

Thursday 12 March:

Breakfast, check out of the hotel and leave for the NEC at 8am

Competition, meet the scientist and award ceremony

Students return by train

The cost of the trip is £95.00. This includes car travel to Birmingham NEC and the journey to and from the hotel. It includes two nights’ accommodation with breakfast and dinner on the Wednesday evening.

As this trip is deemed to be an enhancement to the curriculum, the school normally is unable to offer financial assistance and therefore the full cost of the activity must be borne by yourselves. Payments and accompanying paperwork must be handed in on or before the deadline date outlined to avoid jeopardising your child’s place on the trip/activity. Should your child withdraw from the activity, please be aware that deposits are non-refundable and any further payments can only be refunded if the place can be filled by another student on a waiting list, or if the withdrawal is for an insurable reason. If there are significant changes to the cost of the trip, these may have to be passed on to the student. Be assured that we will try to keep such costs to a minimum.

Any families who are experiencing financial hardship are asked to contact Mrs B Ludlam, Director of Sixth Form Learning, as other support may be available.

We would advise that students do not to take valuables out on school activities, however, should they be taken parents should ensure personal possessions are adequately insured.

It is the parent’s/guardian’s responsibility to update the school should there be any changes to the medical information about their child. Please communicate these to Mrs Brettell, Business Support Manager.

Please complete and return the consent form and monies to the Finance Office.

Yours sincerely

Mrs E Arthurs
