POSITION SUMMARY:

Under the general direction of the Manager, Custodial and Administrative Services and the Custodial Foreman, the Custodian I is responsible for the cleaning in assigned areas

This position performs a diverse range of Custodial activities and ensures the facility is clean, sanitized and secured according to procedures established by the school district.

SPECIFIC ACCOUNTABILITIES

Cleaning all rooms in assigned area according to approved methods and work procedures as established by the school district including the following duties:

  • Maintain and clean floors by sweeping, mopping, vacuuming, scrubbing, burnishing and stripping and applying floor finish. Maintain and clean rugs and carpets by vacuuming, spot cleaning, removing gum and extracting. Remove gum, marks, and soils as required
  • Controlling dust on all surfaces including furniture, counters, ledges, pictures & bulletin boards hanging on walls, floors, corners, woodwork and school equipment
  • Maintain, clean and sanitize washrooms by washing sinks, counters, taps, dispensers, walls, partitions, toilets and urinals, floors and replenishing supplies
  • Control dirt and soil by washing furniture, windows, mirrors, glass partitions, trophy cases, bookshelves, walls, and painted surfaces
  • Remove all garbage and recycling to outside bins. Clean and re-line receptacles as required
  • Clean and sanitize water fountains
  • Replacing burnt out light bulbs. Reporting burnt out ballasts
  • Secure building, ensuring that windows and doors are locked after hours. Set building alarm at end of shift

Responding to concerns or complaints regarding custodial services in the building, by providing information, investigating problems and intervening as required.

Conducting inspections of facility to ensure acceptable district cleaning and sanitation standards are met.

Providing technical advice, assistance and information to a broad range of individuals on a regular basis including clients, students, management, external suppliers, inspectors and contractors.

Ensuring maintenance and upkeep on equipment used in the Custodial department including maintaining an inventory list and providing training to others.

Ensuring that buildings in the assigned area are secured at the appointed hours and that unauthorized people are not permitted to remain.

Performing monthly fire bell tests and report.

Maintaining supply inventories by submitting orders and ensuring that orders and equipment received are properly received, stored, maintained, rotated and used in accordance with district standards.

Working with Foreman to develop and implement annual cleaning plans for facility including summer team cleaning planning and project work for pro d days and school breaks.

Making decisions to organize and coordinate work requests including troubleshooting and submitting reports of damages or repair as they occur in your assigned area

Submitting reports of damages or other requirements for repair as may occur in the assigned area.

Maintain accurate written records as required.

Responding to workplace incidents and emergencies, completing appropriate paperwork and when necessary participating in workplace incident investigations.

Maintaining knowledge of shutoff valve procedures, plumbing, heating, electrical and security systems (fire prevention and intrusion) of the facility.

Maintain a working knowledge of district operational/personnel policies related to the position including the Community Use Program.

Ensures compliance with district and government health and safety procedures and regulations within the Facilities Management department to minimize potential for accidents, injuries and hazards.

Undertaking related duties, as assigned consistent with this position.

ENTRANCE QUALIFICATIONS

Grade 12 or equivalent plus a Building Service Worker certificate from a recognized institution.

One year related experience, including experience in commercial and institutional cleaning.

Demonstrated working knowledge of commercial and institutional cleaning and current methods, procedures and equipment used in the Custodial department.

Proven ability to express ideas effectively both orally and in writing with the ability to explain instructions or information clearly to others

Proven ability to maintain positive interpersonal and communication skills with the demonstrated ability to contribute to an environment which promotes teamwork

Working knowledge of proper safety practices and the demonstrated ability to work in a manner that recognizes personal safety and the safety of others

Proven ability to organize personal workload, work under pressure and complete assignments with minimal supervision.

Proven ability to perform physical activities such as lifting, pushing, pulling and moving materials, equipment and supplies.

Proven ability to make sound decisions in accordance with established policies and procedures.

Working knowledge of computer operation including knowledge of MS Office, email, internet, district automated dispatch, and work order systems.

A valid BC driver’s license.
