  1. APOLOGIES FOR ABSENCE

Apologies for absence were submitted on behalf of Councillor Warmisham and Colette Carol, Ken Derbyshire and P. Greenham.

  1. WELCOME BY COUNCILLOR MILLER

Councillor Miller gave a brief introduction to a) the work currently being undertaken by the Community Committee within the Service Delivery Area and b) the issues to be considered at this meeting.

  1. MINUTES OF PROCEEDINGS

The minutes of the meeting held on 27th November, 2001, were signed by the Chairman as a correct record.

  1. BUDGET SUB-COMMITTEE

RESOLVED:THAT the minutes of the meeting of the Budget Sub-Committee held on 4th February, 2002, be noted.

  1. RADIO REGEN

John Mills, Radio Regen, provided details of the Salford Community Radio Project, indicating that nine projects would be undertaken across the City.

He indicated that the first project had been undertaken in Langworthy and had been successful and that the second project would take place in Kersal, Pendleton and Charlestown.

"PCK FM" would air between Friday, 12th and Sunday, 14th April, 2002.

He indicated that the success of the project would be measured by the interest and involvement of local people.

Local groups and individuals were invited to contact either John Mills or Helen Alderson on 0161 236 7333, for further information.

John Mills then played clips from programmes that had been played on the Langworthy project.

The clips included;

  • "Cool Kids" a programme prepared and presented by local school children;
  • "Salford M6 Crew" a programme prepared and presented by a young people working with the Youth Service
  • a programme presented by members of the Seedley and Langworthy Initiative (SALI); and
  • a programme which included an interview with Hazel Blears M.P.

Councillor Miller thanked John Mills for his informative presentation and re-iterated the point that the project could be successful only with the involvement of local people.

RESOLVED:THAT the report be noted.

  1. KERSAL AND CHARLESTOWN FESTIVAL

Mary Connor submitted a report a) providing details of the history of the Kersal and Charlestown Festival and b) submitting proposals for events in 2002.

She indicated that the involvement of local people was required to make the festival a success.

RESOLVED:THAT members of the community wishing to be involved in the 2002 festival, contact Julie McKinnon.

  1. NEW DEAL FOR COMMUNITIES - FEEDBACK FROM COMMUNITY REPRESENTATIVES

Julie McKinnon submitted a report providing details of -

  • the work undertaken within the first year of the New Deal for Communities programme; and
  • the community representatives who had acted as members of the New Deal for Communities Steering Group

She introduced the Community Representatives who had acted as representatives of the Community on the NDC Steering Group during the past 12 months and the following members provided details of the work that had been undertaken during that period: -

  • Ann-Marie Pickup
  • Kevin Coakley
  • Dorothy Jones
  • Tony Murphy

Julie McKinnon indicated that along with the aforementioned representatives, Lawrence Harrison and Jane Passmore had been nominated to act as members of the New Deal Steering Committee for 2002 / 2003.

Lawrence Harrison and Jane Passmore provided details of their current involvement within the Community and detailed their intent to assist in the New Deal for Communities programme.

Councillor Miller introduced Alan Caddick, New Deal for Communities Co-ordinator.

Alan Caddick provided details of the work that had been undertaken and also the aims for year 2 of the programme.

  1. APPOINTMENT OF COMMUNITY REPRESENTATIVES

Julie McKinnon indicated that six nominations had been received for the appointment of Community Representatives to act as members of the New Deal for Communities Steering Group, and that accordingly those nominations would be accepted.

  1. NEW DEAL FOR COMMUNITIES PRESENTATION

Those in attendance were provided with details of the Year 2 Programme for New Deal for Communities.

Display Boards provided details of -

  • the work undertaken in year 1 of the programme; and
  • proposals for projects in year 2 of the programme.

RESOLVED:THAT the matter be noted.

RESOLVED:THAT the next meeting of this Committee take place on Tuesday, 26th March, 2002, at St. George's Day Centre, Cromwell Road, Salford, commencing at 6.30p.m.
