SCOPE OF PRACTICE

RELATIONSHIPS:

Specified Professional Personnel (SPPs) receiving clinical privileges must be employed by an active member of the Renown Regional Medical Center (or group of physicians), a service which has a contract with the Medical Center or the Medical Center. (Please see the Human Resources Department for employment opportunities.)

The hospital activities of the Specified Professional Personnel shall be under the supervision of the medical staff member(s) who initiates the application and who is responsible for the professional and ethical conduct of the SPP.

As well, the SPP will be indirectly responsible to the appropriate supervisors in the areas of the hospital in which the SPP practices.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Education:High School Diploma, 2 years of college education or 2 years healthcare experience.

Training:Demonstrate proficiency and knowledge in the following areas of cardiovascular surgery (Demonstrated to a perfusionist with the current perfusion contract company:

a.Autotransfusion equipment set-up and operation;

b.Intra-aortic balloon pump set-up and operation;

c.Basic knowledge of proper operating room sterile technique;

d.Basic knowledge of cardiopulmonary anatomy and physiology; and

e.Basic knowledge of the techniques of cardiopulmonary bypass.

Experience:2 years of health care experience

NATURE AND SCOPE:

Perfusion Assistant may perform the following duties for cardiovascular surgery but only under the direct supervision of the Cardiovascular Perfusionist, the Cardiovascular Surgeon and the Anesthesiologist:

1.Chart on the patient's cardiopulmonary bypass flowsheet any monitoring values, event descriptions or laboratory test results,

2.Act as a courier for the perfusionist during cardiopulmonary bypass procedures by transporting blood samples for laboratory evaluation and documenting the results of those tests as part of the patient's surgical record, and

Perfusion Assistant/Cell Saver Technician may perform the following duties for those surgical procedures requiring autotransfusion services using the "Cell Washer" but only under the direct supervision of the primary surgeon and anesthesiologist:

1.Set up the cell saver equipment,

2.Preparation of the anticoagulation solution, and

3.Processing of the patient's shed blood through the "Cell Saver" unit.

Perfusion Assistant/Intra-aortic Balloon Pump Technician would perform the following duties under the direct supervision of the attending physician for those procedures requiring "Intra-aortic Balloon Pump" services:

1.Set up the intra-aortic balloon pump,

2.Assist in the transportation of a patient requiring continuous intra-aortic balloon pump augmentation,

3.Priming of the pressure transducer tubing circuit for use with the intra-aortic balloon pump including preparation of the anticoagulation solution for the transducer's flush device, and

4.Monitoring of the intra-aortic balloon pump including adjustments in timing, arterial pressure waveform interpretation during augmentation and ECG acquisition for intra-aortic balloon pump operation.

4.Demonstration of proficiency and knowledge in the following areas of cardiovascular surgery:

A.Autotransfusion equipment set-up and operation,

B.Intra-aortic balloon pump set-up and operation,

C.Basic knowledge of proper operating room sterile technique,

D.Basic knowledge of cardiopulmonary anatomy and physiology, and

E.Basic knowledge of techniques of cardiopulmonary bypass.
