TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 3RD, 2013 5:30 P.M.

3.0  Council Business Recommendation

3.1  Approval of Minutes from July 16th, 2013 Meeting the Motion to approve the minutes was made by Ishmael Salazar, and was seconded by Rachel Preyleko, Minutes have been approved.

3.2  Introduction of Karen Christensen Discussion

William Luna the Student intern introduced the council to Karen Christensen the Senior Legislative Assistant, and allowed her to introduce herself to the council and inform them about the attendance policy and welcomed the council to a new year of the YAC.

3.3  Ice Breaker Activity
a small ice breaker was set up to allow the members to comingle and become more familiar to fellow council members. The Ice breaker was a game called guess who I am. Included a sticky note on each person with a famous character in history on it. The members would guess who they are by asking questions about their character.

3.4  Elections Action

Elections were held and all members running for positions were asked to give a brief speech about how they will benefit the council by become an officer. Candidates running for commissioner were: Drake Lower, Ernesto Rojas, and Ismael Salazar. For Co-Commission Candidates included: Rachel Preleyko, Ismael Salazar, Vivianne Silva, and Sinporion Phuong. Secretary Candidates were Melissa Banales-Mejia. Chief Justice candidate was Alyssa Romo. Activities Coordinator candidates included: Jasmine Urena, Brittenny De La Cruz. The elections were held on ballots and after they were counted up the officer positions were filled as follows: Commissioner-Ernesto Rojas, Co-Commissioner- Sinporion Phuong, Secretary- Melissa Banales Mejia, Chief Justice- Alyssa Romo, and Activities Coordinators are Jasmine Urena, and Brittenny De La Cruz.

3.5  Annual Retreat Discussion

The Council was asked to fill out a Retreat survey to allow the interns to get feedback about how to improve the Retreat for next year. The surveys were given back and are being looked at to bring to attention for next year’s Youth Retreat.

3.6  Council Policies/ Binder Handouts Activity

The council was informed again to be prompt about arriving to the meetings and events as well as the policies on unexcused absences. 2 consecutive will be grounds for dismissal as well as 4 unexcused nonconsecutive absences. The council was then given their YAC binders for the year, and William the Intern Briefly showed the binders contents to the council.

3.7  2ND ANNUAL SHELTERING HEARTS FUNDRAISER EVENT Discussion

The Council was informed of the first volunteer opportunity of the year called the Sheltering Hearts Fundraiser Event. The council was asked to sign up if possible for 2 separate volunteer times and given information about where it will be and the appropriate clothing necessary. The additional information was provided in the upcoming events section item 7.1.

3.8  Youth In Government Day Discussion

The Intern William Luna briefly informed the council that the annual Youth in Government Day is going to be coming up in October with a tentative date for October 24th. The council was asked to think about where they might be interested in participating, and were informed briefly about what occurs on youth in Government day.

4.0  Committee Discussion With Follow Up Report

4.1  Committee Formation Activity

4.1.1  Committee Name

4.1.2  Selecting Committee Chairperson

4.1.3  Identifying Possible Committee Activities or Projects (10-12)

4.1.3.1  Assisting senior citizens by providing support, organizing fun activities or projects at local hospice locations and senior center facilities.

4.1.3.2  Helping to keep the Second Supervisorial District clean and beautiful by organizing and participating in local community clean-up events, as well providing assistance at the YAC Adopt-A-Trail in Jurupa Valley.

4.1.3.3  Assisting disadvantaged youth and the homeless or low-income populations of the Second District.

The Council was asked to break into separate committees to have focuses on issues within the county. The members had provided ideas at the first meeting about things they would like to make an impact on and are stated in items 4.1.3.1/4.1.3.2/4.1.3.3. The council decided to form 2 committees named #IMPACT, and E.V.A. (Environmental Volunteer Awareness) Each committee was asked to brainstorm ideas for events they would like to participate in and form committee Names. #IMPACT will focus around helping the disadvantaged youth as well as the elderly. The E.V.A. will focus on planning events focused around Environmental help.

7.1  2ND ANNUAL SHELTERING HEARTS FUNDRAISER EVENT

Number of Volunteers: 4-6 members

Time: Setup Shift- 2:30 / Mid Event Shift- 5:30 – 10/10:30PM /Clean up Shift - 9/9:15PM

What To Wear: YAC Shirts/ Black Pants and Black Shirt depending on the shift.

Activity Coordinator: N/A

Additional Information: 2 opportunities to participate are available.

·  We need 2 volunteers to help Greg Adamson, the performance artist, put together his stage. It’s physical, so these volunteers can definitely wear their YAC shirts. This will start at around 2:30-3PM and will last about 2 hours.

·  The second part that can be volunteered for is the staff needs assistance at the end of the evening – around 9:15PM – this section will last about an hour to hour fifteen.
