Provost Research Fellowship

Application Guidelines

The Office of Fellowships awards two Provost Research Fellowships of up to $1,500 for qualified juniors with promising research agendas. These summer research fellowships are intended to prepare exceptional current sophomores or juniors to compete for nationally competitive graduate fellowships such as Rhodes, Marshall, Schwarzman, Knight-Hennessey, Fulbright, Mitchell, Truman, Goldwater, Udall, Gates-Cambridge, or the NSF Graduate Research Fellowship. Candidates must be nominated by a faculty member willing to work with them to develop the research project and application, and to serve as mentor during the Summer. Candidates will exemplify the ideals and best tradition of Santa Clara University, and have a minimum GPA of 3.25.This Fellowship is open to all SCU students, but priority will be given to Humanities, Arts, and Social Science majors. Application deadlines are typically around March 1-15.Award decisions will be made by mid-April.

Priority will be given to majors in the Humanities, Arts, and Social Sciences.

Proposals must not exceed 5 pages (single-spaced) and include the following information:

  1. Student Information (Name, SCU I.D. number, local address, telephone, e-mail address, Major(s)/Minor(s), overall G.P.A., and expected graduation date)
  2. Name and Department of Research Mentor
  3. Research Project Title
  4. Brief Research Project Description (accessible to non-specialist). One paragraph.
  5. Project Plan: Include a clear definition of the research problem, a brief research/creative work design outline, and the significance of the proposed work.
  6. Expected outcomes, with a timeline including anticipated presentations, creative works and/or publications.
  7. Previous Research Experience, if any.
  8. Career Goals
  9. How will funding of this project help prepare you to compete for a nationally competitive graduate fellowship? Which one (or ones) do you intend to apply to and why?
  10. A written summary of the research must be submitted to the University Honors Program upon completion.
