Undergraduate Student Awards for Academic Excellence in the General Education Program at Temple University

The General Education Program at Temple University will recognize up to five Temple undergraduates for superior scholarly or creative work produced as part of a Gen Ed course. The first place winner will receive an award of $750; the second place winner will receive $500; and the third place winner will receive $250. These awards will be presented for creative/artistic works, as well as for scholarly papers.

The criteria used for evaluating the submissions include, but are not limited to, the work’s demonstration of the learning goals of a particular GenEd area and its reflection of the academic/intellectual spirit of the GenEd Program. Recipients will be chosen by the GenEd Awards Selection subcommittee composed of members of the GenEd Executive Committee and Area coordinators, and the GenEd administration.

Faculty members nominate students who have demonstrated superior scholarly or creative achievement through the production of a notable term paper, research project, creative or artistic endeavor, in any of the Breadth areas or the Foundation areas of the GenEd curriculum.

To qualify for an award, nominees must be either a freshman, sophomore, or junior enrolled at Temple at the time of nomination (students graduating in the spring or summer of 2017 are not eligible). To apply, a faculty member or student will submit to as attachments a coversheet completed by the supporting faculty member (see below), a brief statement written by the faculty member outlining why the nominee’s work is deserving of recognition, and the nominated student work. If the nominated work cannot be attached as a file, please bring the work to 500 Conwell Hall, c/o Istvan Varkonyi and email supporting documents. Small group submissions may also be nominated. A student or a faculty member may initiate the nomination process. A faculty member may nominate up to five students. The deadline for all submissions is May 3, 2017.
