Class Expectations and Information - 2016/2017

This is an introductory course designed to familiarize you with various topics in chemistry. You may have heard that chemistry is hard - but it is not! All you have to do is keep up with the work in class, and if you don't understand something - DON'T PANIC! I'm here to help you! See me as soon as you are lost and I will help you in any way I can. Most misunderstandings can be cleared up in a few minutes and you will be on your way to becoming a chemist! (All accommodations will be respected.)

What you have to know to be successful in this class:

EXTRA HELP

·  Extra help days are Tuesday and Wednesday after school in Room W18.

·  You can also see me during my free periods (see my schedule on my webpage) but they are by appointment only. Send me an email to see if I am available.

GRADING:

·  Grading is based on a summative percentage system. Your grade is calculated by dividing the total number of points you earned by the maximum number of points for each assignment, multiplied by 100.

·  EXTRA CREDIT: This class has been designed so that the student will pass if all assignments are met. Therefore, no extra credit is available. Remember - don't panic! Come and see me if you have a concern!

MATERIALS NEEDED:

·  A one-inch flexible binder - you will be receiving a lot of handouts - folders do not work! By placing the handouts in order in your binder, you will have the flow of the topic and all the steps will be in place. THIS IS VERY IMPORTANT!

·  A marble-bound notebook to be used as a lab book. This will stay in the classroom.

·  A calculator. A graphing or scientific calculator (TI-30) is fine. You probably have one from middle school. There are calculators available in the classroom. Please note that if you are using a graphing calculator, I may need to clear the memory before an exam.

·  Textbook: a textbook will be assigned to you. This may be left at home.

ATTENDANCE:

·  All policies put forth by the North Salem Attendance Policy will be followed.

·  Tardiness: please bring a late note to class. If you have no note, you are considered illegally tardy and will be marked as so. You are responsible for any work/notes missed.

·  Absence: I will be happy to reply to an email regarding missed worked when you are unable to attend class. It is your responsibility to obtain any notes missed in class and to see me with questions. I will be happy to help you!

HOMEWORK:

·  Homework may be assigned every day and IT IS THE KEY TO YOUR SUCCESS! This is when you may realize you need more help! Any homework assigned is due the following class.

·  All homework will be listed on the main page of my webpage.

ASSESSMENTS: (Exams, Quizzes, Quests).

·  Assessments will be announced at least three days in advance. A list of topics and the date of the assessment will be listed on the main page of my website.

·  Expect a quiz every Wednesday! Quizzes are worth 20 points and one quiz will be dropped at the end of EACH QUARTER.

·  Make-up assessments. Unless other arrangements have been made with me, the following apply. Again, DON'T PANIC! If you have extenuating circumstances, please contact me!

§  Exams/Quests must be made up within three days of your return to school

§  Quizzes must be made up within one day of your return to school

§  All make-ups will be placed in the testing room to take at your convenience within the timeframe noted above.

Labs/Activities

·  For each lab/activity, the student will hand in a formal lab report or a lab response as determined by the instructor and the lab due date will be listed on my website. Labs will be collected at the start of class or on Turnitin.com - labs handed in after the start of class will be considered late. Late labs will incur a penalty of 10% of the grade per day late.

·  Pre-lab assignments may also be given and graded.

·  LAB SAFETY IS ESSENTIAL! Failure to follow safety rules or have on closed-toe shoes will result in expulsion from lab. See the following information on how to make up a lab.

·  If you are absent for a lab: the lab make-up day is the following Tuesday or Wednesday after school or by appointment. Labs must be made up within one week of the original lab as equipment is shared with other classes and the lab must be broken down as soon as possible. Once the make-up time period has passed, the lab grade will revert to a zero. Contact me via email to arrange for a lab make-up if you cannot come the following Thursday.

Please note: The instructor reserves to right to amend these expectations in writing at any time. This course ends with a final exam, not a Regents Exam. A copy of these expectations can be found on my website under Class Expectations (look on the left-hand side navigation bar).

That's it! I find chemistry endlessly fascinating and very exciting and I look forward to sharing this with you!
