Karahipi Tumuaki - President’s Scholarship 2017

A post-graduate scholarship for Māori students and intern/trainee psychologists

The Scholarship is valued at $5000 plus one year’s free membership of the Society. If the recipient is a Full Member of the Society, the subscription fee will be waived for one year. [2]If the recipient is not a member, they will receive a year’s free subscribership to the Society. The benefits of free subscribership include mailed copies of member periodicals and access to professional development activities at preferential rates.

Applications close on 1 July, 2017

Applicants will:

Ø  Identify ethnically as Māori and be involved in the Māori community

Ø  Be enrolled in any one of the following:

o  Masters Degree in Psychology

o  Doctoral Degree (e.g. PhD or DClinPsy)

o  Postgraduate Diploma programme that is a direct pathway to registration as a psychologist

o  Approved supervision pathway that leads to registration as a psychologist (i.e., Defence, CYFS, Department of Corrections)

Ø  Engage in research that advances Māori aspirations and development in psychology and the community.

Selection:

Applications will be considered by the Scholarship Review Panel, consisting of three psychologists. One shall be the President of the Society (or their nominee), and two shall be Māori nominated by the Society’s National Standing Committee on Bicultural Issues (NSCBI).

When making the award the panel shall consider:

Ø  the quality of the proposed research

Ø  the usefulness of the research to Māori

Ø  the ability of the researcher

The decision of the Scholarship Review Panel is final. The successful applicant will be notified as soon as possible after applications close. The Scholarship Review Panel reserves the right to seek further information from applicants to aid their decision-making process. Should an applicant be unsuccessful, once a decision has been made by the panel, no further correspondence will be entered into. An applicant may only be awarded the scholarship once.


Payment of the Scholarship:

Ø  Sixty percent of the scholarship ($3000) will be paid when the Scholarship Review Panel has received confirmation of the recipient’s enrolment, and, if applicable, ethical approval for their research or a letter from their principal supervisor stating that ethical approval will be sought.

Ø  The remaining forty percent ($2000) shall be paid when the recipient has completed:

1.  A 1000 word summary of research findings for publication in Psychology Aotearoa prior to the psychology conference.

2.  The submission and acceptance of an abstract to present a paper based on the applicant’s research at the Society’s Annual Conference in the year following the award of the scholarship or other agreed time. This final payment is intended to support the cost of conference attendance.

[1] Applicants applying under the supervision pathway should ensure their application shows they have been awarded a Masters degree in psychology.

[2] Waiver of the Society Membership subscription fee or admission as a Subscriber shall apply in the 12 months following the Scholarship award.
