Series 2012-09D February 2012

Postsecondary Plans of 2010-11 Florida High School Graduates

Florida public high schools annually survey their graduating seniors regarding their educational plans after graduation. In this pre-graduation survey, graduates choose from nine types of institutions when indicating their postsecondary education plans. These categories include public and private community colleges in Florida; public and private universities in Florida; community colleges and universities outside Florida; the U.S. Armed Forces; and technical, trade, or other training in and out of the state. Please note that the figures in this report are not reflective of actual postsecondary enrollment and that not all graduates participate in the optional survey. In 2010-11, the majority of graduates (52.0%) indicated that they intended to enroll in a Florida public community college or university. The graph below illustrates the number and percentage of 2010-11 graduates with postsecondary plans by type of institution.

Figure 1: Postsecondary Plans by Type of Institution, 2010-11

Data for this publication were taken from the Florida Department of Education Student Information Database, Survey 5 data, as of February 6, 2012. District-level data for Figure 1 are provided in Table 1 below. Please note that prior to 2008-09, the percentage of students with postsecondary plans was derived from the total number of diploma recipients. Beginning in 2008-09, the percentage was derived from the total number of diploma and certificate recipients. Therefore, percentages in this 2010-11 report may not be comparable with the same report years prior to 2008-09.
