BIOGRAPHY

Dr. Burrell is an innovative leader with more than 30 years of experience in secondary and higher education settings. She has served as the department chair for one of the largest departments at SUNY Oswego, School of Education for the past 12 years. She has co-directed a professional development grant serving hundreds of teachers across New York State.She brings a strong academic background and extensive experience, managing faculty personnel, and overseeing programs and initiatives to increase teaching effectiveness. She led her 23-program department through a successful NCATE visit with full accreditation granted until 2021.She has earned a reputation as a collaborative communicator who is focused on building relationships to drive positive change across disciplines and multiple departments across campus. Her research and teaching interests include investigating teaching mathematics through technology. Dr. Burrell has over 19 publications on teaching, comparative culture, new technologies, and the meaning of learning in a globalized world. She has taught educational assessment, foundations of education, mathematics methods, comparative education and a variety of mathematics courses before the calculus level.

Currently chairsgraduate and undergraduate department of more than 90 full and part-time faculty; Responsible for personnel processes for hiring, continuing appointment, term appointments and discretionary salary increases; Managed recruitment, curriculum development, budgets, advisement and field placement for Adolescence, Childhood, Literacy, Special Education, and Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL); Responsiblefor departmental accreditation (Specialty Program Assessment reports-SPA) across 23 programs; Developed strong partnerships with academic services for student success; Collaborated with the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences to organize the first School of Education Mathematics Camp for entering students childhood and adolescence education majors.

University& Community Partnerships

Initiated ongoing partnerships with the College of Liberal Arts and Science (CLAS) and the School of Media Communication Media and the Arts (SMCA) for the purpose of modernizing and maintaining Curriculum and Instruction departmental programs. Collaborated with multiple school districts to encourage Teacher Assistant advancement. Managed process for converting face-to-face courses into blended/hybrid online courses; Coordinated efforts across multiple central New York schools to ensure student placements; Developed partnerships with schools for teachers to participate in professional development programs.

Assessment Experience

Coordinated General Education assessments across department level courses; Selected to analyze Middle States assessment data, 2009 and 2015; In preparation for CAEP/NCATE accreditation conductedongoing professional development for faculty. Led faculty in an ongoing process for re-aligning the curriculum and programs around a new performance task, theEducation Teacher Performance Assessment (edTPA); Initiated curricular realignment to reflect current state regulations, accreditation standards, and market needs; Attended CAEP/NCATE assessment conference.
